Injured wild rabbit found: vet suggests euthanasia. What to do?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | unspayed | 3 lbs

My friend found a wild rabbit on the streets, and she says it’s 2 legs are broken. We live in Illinois, btw. The only choice the vet said is to put it down. She doesn’t want to, I also heard it’s illegal to have a wild rabbit. Also putting down the rabbit costs close to 200. She isn’t very sure what to do. Any suggestions?

Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm so sorry to hear about this poor bunny. The outcome of this little guy seems very poor, and even if she had surgery, her recovery would be difficult and prognosis guarded. Have you looked into the local wildlife authorities, or animal shelters? They would be able to take in the bunny and have her put to sleep. As difficult as it is to make this decision, putting her down would be in her best interest to alleviate her pain and suffering under the circumstances.

Poor rabbit! I would take this rabbit into a vet or the SPCA right away. You can let them know you found it on the side of the road, and they can give it medical treatment. The SPCA might be the best option if you don't want to pay for it's treatment. It does sounds like the poor rabbit needs medical treatment now.

What to do for an injured baby rabbit with cat bite and leg issues?

It sounds as if this bunny has a very serious injury and is in critical condition. I would recommend taking it to a veterinarian as soon as possible so it can get appropriate treatment. This does not sound like an injury you can treat at home. Even if you are not able to afford its care I’m sure any vet’s office would be willing to see if they can help it if you are willing to relinquish it. I hope this helps. My rabbit has a broken leg, surgery is too expensive. What to do?

Sorry to hear about James.. If surgery is not an option, the only other thing you can do is keep him under strict cage-rest (a small cage) for at least 1 month, possibly more. Usually the leg will heal, but some lameness will persist. This does not mean in most cases a poor quality of life, but he is a large bunny and may require some adjustments in his environment (e.g. making things more accessible to him). Having said that, surgery is usually a better option, and there may be organizations that may help with the funding, so I advise you to check this option first.

My rabbit's leg is injured. Can she recover without a vet visit?

Thanks for reaching out about Poppy and including photos.. Yes, you should see a veterinarian as dislocations or fractures, will unlikely heal well on their own, and are definitely painful. The caging is inappropriate, as it is a bird cage. The bars are too far apart and limbs/feet can get caught. Good luck.

My cat caught a wild rabbit. What care does it need for its injuries?

It is very hard to give much advice without seeing the injuries he sustained. It sounds like you did a good job but wild rabbits do not do well in captivity. If there is a wildlife rescue group near you it would be best to take him there so they can give him any medical attention he needs and then release him. If that is not possible, then just continue to do the best you can. As soon as he has strength to be released it is best to do so as soon as possible.

My rabbit's back legs aren't working. Should I consider euthanasia?

Hello, I am very sorry to hear this has happened to Lucy. Hind limb paralysis carries a poor prognosis in rabbits and euthanasia is certainly reasonable if that’s what going on. However, the reason for paralysis could change the prognosis, so I would recommend having a veterinarian at least do an examination before euthanasia in case there is something else happening that could potentially be fixed or managed.
