Why is my hedgehog acting weird and sleeping at odd times?

Swelling and changes in behavior could indicate Kozmo might be having some illness that is causing hind end irritation as well. It is best to have a vet take a look at him, especially if this has been happening for more than a day, or Kozmo is showing signs of illness such as changes in behavior, lethargy, loss of appetite, etc. Male hedgehogs don't go into heat as they aren't the ones that carry a pregnancy. A heat cycle occurs when a female is ovulating and ready to mate and create babies. Males instead produce the sperm to impregnate females. Males that are intact and excited may have some swelling of the hind end, however you indicated Kozmo was neutered.

In general, hedgehogs need a high protein diet since they are insectivores. Mazuri insectivore diet is a good option, but feeding insects like mealworms, roaches, etc is also enriching and a good food source for them. Some hedgehog owners feed high quality cat or kitten food, which is an acceptable alternative to an insectivore food. Avoid human table scraps as obesity is a common problem in hedgehogs. Also, make sure you keep the hedgehogs enclosure warm ~72-82F. Dental disease, mites, heart disease, and cancer are common diseases of hedgehogs you might want to be aware of.

Green stool can happen in hedgehogs. It can be caused by a variety of reasons, including stress, illness, or diet change. If he otherwise seems normal than you can monitor him and see if the color goes back to normal, especially if you have introduced a new food. If you have any concern that your hedgehog is sick, take him to a veterinarian. It is fine to add water to his food but you should still offer him fresh water in a water bottle at all times.

I’m sorry to hear about your hedgehog. There is a progressive neurologic disorder in these guys called “Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome”. I am suspicious that this may be the problem. However other issues such as brain tumor, trauma, etc could be the cause as well. I would try using a dropper to drop water into his mouth to keep him hydrated until you can get him to the exotic veterinarian. Thank you for your question! My preferred method for warming a hedgehog cage is to use a ceramic heat bulb. They are sold in the reptile section of most pet stores. The reason that I prefer this type of bulb is that they only emit heat, and no light, so Quilliam's day/night cycle will not be affected. Many of the brands will also have a chart on them to assist you in what wattage you need from the bulb, but you will need the distance from the bulb to Quilliam (aka the height of the cage) as well as your desired temperature in order to use the chart (temperature recommendations for hedgehogs are 70-80F depending on what care sheet you are using). I would also recommend monitoring the temperature in his cage once you have added your heat bulb to ensure that it is within the desired range. It should like Comet is getting really sick. Hedgehogs can get bladder stones, urinary tract issues but also endocrine disease (issues with cortisol) and cancers. I would recommend taking Comet to a vet for a good physical exam and possible bloodwork and x-rays. IT is important to figure out the exact cause so proper treatment can be started.
