My healthy young rat died suddenly. What caused it? Was it my fault?

Sorry for your loss. By the description, respiratory collapse is likely, probably mycoplasma. Respiratory difficulty can lead to cardiac arrest. A necropsy at a veterinary office can give more answers.

Hello, I am so sorry to hear that Candy passed away suddenly. I know that must have been quite a shock to you. I can tell you loved him very much. To answer you question, rabbits sometimes die suddenly, just like humans and other animals. I cannot tell you why this happened without a necropsy (autopsy). My best guess would be a heart attack (this can happen even in young animals). As to whether or not the vitamin tonic contributed or caused his death, I can't answer that. I would need much more information to even get a hint of an idea like: Candy's age, what his diet was, how much he weighed, the exact concentrations of all the ingredients in the tonic and how much of that tonic you actually had given over what period of time. Even with all that information there is no way to know for sure. Again, an autopsy would give you the best chance at finding out what happened. Please, I understand your sadness and I have tremendous sympathy for you, but don't try to look for someone to blame. Sometimes death happens suddenly and it is no one's fault. Poor Scout! I am so sorry for your loss and traumatic event. It is hard to say exactly what was going on but she have contracted some weird type of viral infection or bacterial meningitis causing these symptoms. Rats are also known for getting cancer and a brain tumor certainly could have caused similar symptoms. Again I am sorry for your loss. Hang in there!

I'm very sorry for the loss of your pet. Without a post mortem exam, it is difficult to say what could have caused such a sudden death. It may have been a genetic condition, infection or something in the environment. These little critters are very adept at concealing illness or injury even from experienced owners. You should take some solace in knowing she likely did not suffer. Monitor your remaining pig for any unusual symptoms or behaviors. Gradually reacclimate her to you. This can be done by introducing your hand into the cage for short periods of time and slowly increasing the length as she progresses. Provide small treats each time you interact with her. Once she has accepted your hand IN the cage, try petting her gently for increasing periods of time. Talk softly and move slowly. If she allows you to hold her, start off again with short periods of time until she accepts handling. It may take some time but be patient and be consistent.

The fact that he he started getting cold and was not acting normal suggests to me that he was in shock. There are a few different causes of shock that could be related to the heart, acute organ failure or possible toxin ingestion. The best thing you can do to determine the cause (if you are interested), is have his body examined by a veterinary pathologist. You can organize this through your vet, or your vet could do the exam. Unfortunately, seemingly sudden death can happen in rabbits but without a post-mortem examination (necropsy) then the best we can do is guess at the possibilities. Now, I don't have his entire history so some of these things may not relate to him but typically this is the list we go by: 1. heatstroke 2. heart attack (can happen from underlying disease or a severe fright) 3. viral or bacterial disease 4. toxin ingestion 5. underlying kidney or liver problem 6. GI stasis (the GI tract stop moving) 7. heavy intestinal parasites burden 8. cancer 9. old age (could he be older than you thought) I didn't see that your vet did anything wrong or prescribed any incorrect medications. I am very sorry for the loss of Mozart. Without a physical exam or a post mortem exam, it would be almost impossible to determine why he passed away. It could have been anything from a toxicity to something congenital since he passed so quickly. Rabbits, being prey animals, are quite adept at concealing illness until they are very sick.
