My 5-week hamster is small, bald, and weak. Will he grow or survive?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 7 days old

I have a five-week old djungarian hamster who is very small for his age and has a near-bald head and belly. Weak and clumsy/twitchy but behavior is otherwise normal, fed a varied diet. No mites or apparent viruses as siblings weren't affected. What condition could he have and will he eventually catch up in size (and his fur which is most worrying?), or should I not expect him to live long? Thank you very much in advance.

Runts frequently have underlying issues, some congenital, in addition to being small. He may catch up or he may fail to thrive. Without a physical exam, it is difficult to say definitively. Consider keeping him separated to prevent bullying or aggression. Make sure he continues to eat and drink. Weigh him frequently to confirm gains.
