Why is my dwarf hamster itching, losing weight, and escaping his cage?

My Russian dwarf hamster constantly is scratching and itching himself. I tried to see if he had mites but it doesn't look like it he's also getting a lot thinner than he used to be and he keeps trying to escape his cage. I thought you wanted to play so I put him in his playpen but he keeps trying to escape that too.

Hi there! So very sorry to hear about Jasper! I certainly think you're on the right track thinking about mites. This diagnosis however should be confirmed or ruled out by your veterinarian who can scrape the skin for mites and identify them under the microscope. The itchiness from the mites can cause stress and weight loss. Other causes of itchy skin can be sensitivity to any new products in the environment that may be causing itch and irritation. Also, hamsters can develop Cushing's disease, which effects the adrenal glands - tiny glands around the kidneys that control hormone levels. These hormone levels can become disrupted in this disease process and cause thinning skin and weight loss. Either way, I'd bring your little guy in to see his veterinarian, so he can have an exam and some testing done. One of the mites we can see on pets is called a scabies mite, and those are contagious to humans. Therefore I'd have him seen as soon as you can!

Your hamster may be suffering from ectoparasites such as mites or fleas and/or an allergy to the bites. I suggest you take him to a veterinarian for a hands-on exam and diagnosis. The vet can prescribe or treat your hamster with a proper medicine to kill the parasites. There are mite treatments for hamsters available in the pet shops, but I am not sure whether they are effective. I am very sorry winter is not feeling well. I would recommend taking her to a vet due to the weight loss and hair changes. Typically hamsters do not carry disease like infect people but I would recommend discussing that with the vet at her visit. I would be concerned about possible dental disease, skin infection, skin parasites or even internal disease. Winter really needs a good exam to determine the cause and provide proper treatment. hope that helps

Why is my dwarf hamster scratching so much and uncomfortable?

Moo Moo may have mites. Take a magnifying glass and inspect his fur. You may see mites crawling around, or skin damage. You should be able to get a mite spray at a pet shop to treat Moo Moo with. You will need to completely clean out the cage, replace the bedding, disinfect the toys and the cage. Hopefully that will exterminate them.

Why is my hamster itching, sleeping more, and showing signs of stress?

I am sorry to hear about Chip. We do worry about parasites like skin mites in hamsters. We could also have an allergy or irritation due to bedding. I would recommend removing all bedding and cleaning his cage thoroughly and replacing with a scent free paper bedding (such as Carefresh). If the itching continues, I would recommend making an appointment for him to be check out by a veterinarian. Good luck!

My dwarf hamster has bald spots and scabs. Is it stress from moving?

Thank you for posting this question. My suspicion is that S’more may have always had a few mites, but his immune system kept them under control. Stress of moving to a new environment may have weakened his immune systems and allowed the mites to become more abundant and damaging. Of course this is all just a possibility. Other concerns like bacterial skin infection or ringworm are all possibilities as well. Regardless I suspect that the stress likely played a role in the process. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. Based on their physical examination they will recommend a treatment plan. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. He is probably itchy. Itch in hamsters can be caused by this could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. Why is my hamster itching constantly after escaping under house?

Poor Olaf! This could be due to an allergy or she could have picked up some type of parasite like lice or mites. I would have your vet look at her to see what is causing the itching. If she itches too much with no resolve she could cause herself to develop a skin infection. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon.
