My hamster died with neck fluid. Is this normal or did I cause it?

I'm sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, without a necropsy (animal autopsy) it would be hard to say what caused Star to pass. If there was swelling and discharge from the ear, or from a gland on the body, the infection could have become septic and caused the passing, or there may have been an underlying illness or medical condition that caused it as well. It sounds like you were caring owners, so Star had a good life and lots of love while he lived. Sorry to hear about Midnight. Intestinal infections, liver disease, and other possibilities can lead to diarrhea. A veterinarian can probably perform a necropsy to determine a cause of death, if that would help. Sorry for your loss.

There is also psychogenic polydipsia (behavioral increased water consumption). Without an autopsy, an answer can't been given. Sorry again for your loss.

If his abdomen has fluid, you can have him tapped periodically to provide relief. If the underlying cause cannot be treated, your options may be limited. If he retains fluid, it could affect his breathing which will not be a comfortable condition. Monitor for lethargy, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite or pale, blue gums.

I am so sorry to hear that. If she hasn’t been breathing for several minutes then she is likely deceased. Hamsters lifespan is 2-3 years so she may have died of natural causes. Sorry about your hamsters. Heat stroke would be a possibility as hamsters with heavy coats are unable to cope with excessive heat, especially if over 80 F. A veterinary visit could perform a necropsy in an attempt to determine cause of death. Sorry again.

It has the appearance of an abscess or other infection. She likely needs antibiotics for treatment. These require an exam with your veterinarian before they can be dispensed. In the meantime, keep the area clean and dry. The most you can do is use diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) to cleanse the area daily. Monitor for lethargy or loss of appetite.
