My hamster chirps and curls up when breathing. Is this normal?

It would be hard to say without an exam, however respiratory issues usually result in symptoms such as raspy breathing, coughing, sneezing, wheezing and changes in behavior including loss of appetite, lethargy, etc. Squeaking on its own doesn't really indicate this, however if you are concerned, or Bolletje is showing symptoms listed above, a vet visit is best. Until you can get her to your vet, keeping her warm and eating and drinking may help, but if symptoms worsen, seeking care sooner is needed.

If you notice any increase in respiratory rate, nasal discharge, coughing, or sneezing, then this is probably a respiratory infection. Respiratory infections are fairly common in hamsters. If Chestnut is not exhibiting any of these symptoms and is otherwise doing ok, I would just monitor him for now. Monitor appetite and water intake, but a veterinary visit is recommended. Hamsters ask slightly prone to heart disease also, which can cause respiratory problems. No, I would not be overly worried. He may just be tired from stress. Just keep an eye on him and if he isn't better in 24 hours you should take him to a vet for an exam. He may be coming down with an illness; very common, especially if purchased at a pet store.

I am sorry to hear about Chippy. These are concerning signs and I would recommend getting Chippy into the vet as soon as possible. We would be concerned depending on his age about a respiratory infection or a heart issue. He may be able to be treated with antibiotics or other medication if an infection is the cause. Ensure he is in a draft free room with no air pollutants such as smoke, candles, air fresheners and has very clean cage with minimal dust (carefresh style paper shavings are the best) which can irritate the respiratory tract and get him to the vet right away.

Infrequent sneezing could be a sign of airways irritation, for example from the bedding or dust. It could be due to allergy as well. If the sneezing is only infrequent and your Ike is drinking, eating and playful as normal you should just monitor her at home. If she develops discharge from the nose or eyes, please take her to your local vets then.
