How much will medicine for my guinea pig's URI typically cost?

A guinea pig vet appointment usually costs the same (for the initial exam) as a cat or dog appointment. Prices vary greatly by area, whether rural or city vet and also by individual practice. So the best would be to call your vet or a few vets in your area to find out their fee.

Unfortunately if Carby has a URI, and it does sound like it from your description, then he will need antibiotic treatment in order to get better. it's important for him to be stress free and eat a good quality food as it can improve his immune reaction to the infection, but this does not replace antibiotics, which you can only get from the vet.

Typically antibiotics range from $25-$50 depending on your sized pet and the area where you are. But that is just for the antibiotic medication alone, it does not include the office exam (range $40-$60) and the urinalysis exam (range $25-$50). So all in all you are looking around ~ $120 for a full UTI workup and medications. I would definitely recommend switching to a different antibiotic, after baytril fails i usually try TMS and then Zhitromax, both of them for 2-3 weeks. if this doesn't work either the last resort is Penicillin injections for 1-2 weeks.

There are some antibiotics safer to give newborns, such as doxycycline, and treats many of the diseases that cause URIs in guinea pigs. Unfortunately your rat will most likely need antibiotics to help him get over his upper respiratory tract infection and you will need a prescription from your vet for this. I would definitely have a vet take a look to figure out why this is happening, and if they believe the tooth is just going to come out on its own. If he is in enough pain in and around the mouth / teeth, he may eventually stop eating and drinking. Unlike dogs and cats who can do this for a couple days, anorexia in rodents for even a period of 12-24 hours is very, very bad. The cost of the visit will largely depend on what the vet finds, diagnostics that may be required, treatments, and if needed, medications to go home. Geographic region will also play a major role in price of veterinary care. Can't say I know much about cost in Hawaii, but since everything else is always more expensive there, vet care may follow that pattern. Hope this makes sense.
