Female guinea pig spraying & enlarged vulva: heat or medical issue?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female | unspayed | 1.75 lbs

I thought my female guinea pig was in heat because her vulva was enlarged and she was spraying everywhere in the cage, but it has been nearly a month and she is still having the same problem. Could it be a show of dominance towards my other female GP, or an actual medical problem?

I didn't see that you mentioned how old Lilypad is, but this could be a sign of a medical problem. Cystic ovaries are very common in guinea pigs, and their presence can result in behavior changes. Additionally, other medical problems, such as urinary issues, can also result in urine spraying/urinating more frequently than normal.
I would recommend having Lilypad examined by a veterinarian. They can perform a thorough examination, and may recommend radiographs (x-rays) or a ultrasound depending on what is found. From there, they can make recommendations for treatments.

Typically guinea pigs do not become sexually mature until they are two months of age, and she is still younger than that. That makes me wonder if there is something else going on with her, and the lethargy also points to a possible illness. If her vulva is swollen, she could have an infection like a UTI. I'd take her into the vet first thing tomorrow for a health check. I hope this helps!

My young female guinea pigs hum. Is spaying necessary for them?

Thanks for reaching out about Frida. Guinea pigs are induced ovulators and therefore have prolonged ovulations. But, incidence of ovarian and uterine disease is relatively low, compared to other rodents. Spaying guinea pigs is possible but not recommended unless needed. Ovarian cysts are the most common reproductive disease in guinea pigs, unusually manifest as hair loss and possible bleeding from the vulva. At that time they can be spayed. Good luck.

If you are certain the area looks swollen (meaning you have viewed the area previously and it now appears altered) I would recommend a visit to the vet for your guinea pig. Some guinea pigs can have problems with a urinary infection and/or bladder stones that can cause their urine to look like as you described. This is not normal. If Peaches is pregnant this could be a serious problem. It's a good idea to have your vet examine Peaches and do a urinalysis to check for infection and other problems. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Why is my guinea pig bleeding from her private area? What to do?

A bloody discharge from the vagina could be caused by a severe UTI, bladder stones (quite common in guinea pigs), or a uterine/vaginal infection. There are no home remedies for this, I am afraid, so you will need to make an appointment with your vet for an exam and possibly x-rays.Infection is usually treated with injectable antibiotics and pain medicine. Bladder stones may need to be removed with surgery.
