It isn't "necessary", just strongly recommended. Any pet should be examined upon arriving home to confirm good health or to diagnose and treat any preexisting conditions. Yearly exams are also recommended for much the same reason.

Hello. Other than to make sure your GP is perfectly healthy, has no intestinal parasites, normal dentition, no ear, eye & skin problems, then no you do not have to bring your pig to the vet. There are no vaccinations necessary. But if he has never been seen, I would recommend doing so. Then, the only time you may need to have him seen is if he loses weight, develops diarrhea, develops any sores, lesions or hair loss. Most guinea Pigs if fed & housed properly, will never need routine veterinary care. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Guinea pigs don’t need any vaccinations but it’s a good idea to take them to see your vet for yearly check ups, to monitor weight, teeth, claws, skin, feeding routines etc. Also find details of a good exotic vet where you could take them for any particular condition that your vet might not be able to treat or advise you on. How can I keep my guinea pigs healthy and prevent them from getting sick?

Do not introduce any new guinea pigs to your current pigs without them being quarantined first for at least 2 weeks. That way no new infections will be introduced. Feed them a high quality diet like Oxbow. Remember, the majority of the diet should be hay (preferably Timothy).
