My guinea pig has spots in its mouth. Is it serious? What to do?

Judging by the photos you provided I would not be worried about those spots on the inside of his mouth/lips. The tissue looks like it may just be a little swollen but does not appear infected or look cancerous. A thorough examination by your vet is a good idea but if Teddy is otherwise eating well and doing ok, I would not be too concerned. I hope this helps. Rocky could have a dental problem like malocclusion going on. This is a very serious issue and often your vet will need to used sedation and take skull or dental X-rays in order to determine how significant the problem is. Hopefully the stain is just a food stain, but I recommend a visit with a vet who deals with guinea pigs in order to find out for sure.

Thanks for reahcing out about Gordo and including photos. Could there be aggression from another animal? External parasites (mites) can lead to itching, and the scratching to cause the lesions. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Cleaning with a warm, moistened wash cloth might help but avoid soaps or topical antibiotics, as guinea pigs are meticulous groomers and will ingest. Good luck.

Your guinea pig may have an upper respiratory infection or a tooth abscess. You should take it to a veterinarian familiar with guinea pigs for a check up of his teeth (guinea pigs often have malocclusions and teeth that are too long). If there is an upper respiratory infection your cavy needs to be treated with injectable antibiotics. Guinea pigs cannot take antibiotics by mouth as it kills their intestinal flora and can indeed kill the guinea pig. Should the crusts go away and your guinea pig eats and drinks well and is happy, then this might have been caused by a draft and it will not need a vet visit.

This is likely an abscess which will need to be seen and treated by a veterinarian. The vet will need to lance the abscess and flush it. Since it may be involving the teeth, your vet may want to x-ray the head to see the extent. Kuri will need antibiotics. If she isn't itching or rubbing at it, there is no cause for concern. It isn't reddened and there is no discharge. Whatever it is/was seems to be resolving or healing. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, redness, discharge or odor. See your veterinarian if necessary.
