My guinea pig has mites. Where can I find affordable vet care?

I adopted a guinea pig from petco and it has mites/mange and i dont want to give up on him ive learned to really love him :( please help . I want to take him to a vet but im scared of the prices i might not be able to afford

If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Jasper really does have to see a vet, and leaving this untreated can lead to hearing loss. I would tell your parents you spoke to a vet who said he needed to see a vet immediately. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. That this point in time, he has to see a vet. He sounds very sick, and this cannot be treated at home. I would be afraid this could be deadly without veterinary care. Ideally you'd get the piggies a vet visit along with a deworming depending on the type of worms they have. However if you absolutely can't care for them, afford dewormer, or they continue to worsen, then surrendering to a local shelter may be best.

My guinea pig has itchy, bleeding ears. Could it be mites or fungus?

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Hamtaro's ear- from the pictures you sent, it looks very red and inflamed. Ear mites may be a cause as well as fungal infections. A veterinarian can rule out ear mites with an ear cytology sample (basically a swab or sample of material from the ear) and a fungal culture of the hair near or around the ear. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause. I would try and keep the area clean for now. Mild cleansing cloth or 3% hydrogen peroxide to the affected area may help until a diagnosis can be made with your veterinarian. I hope this helps and best of luck to you!

Rabbits and rodents with mite issues are best resolved with Revolution for kittens / cats. It is a vet only product so you will need to obtain a vet prescription to obtain the product, which will likely mean bringing your piggy in for a visit. Hope this helps.

My guinea pig has strange ear skin and eye injury. Should I see a vet?

I am so sorry for the delay in answering your question. Mites are very common in guinea pigs and may be the cause. Take her to your vet so they can determine if this is indeed the problem, and can advise you on how best to treat it. In the meantime, change the bedding daily and monitor her food and water intake--if she is lethargic, or is not eating or drinking, take her to the vet right away.
