My guinea pig is losing hair, suspect mites. Can't afford vet help?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 9 months old | 900 lbs

I think my guinea pig has mites on her stomach and her legs she loosing hair, but I can’t find anywhere that sells mite spray and I can’t take her to the vets because of money issues what should I do?

There are a couple of reasons why Squeakers could be losing her hair, and mites is one of those reasons. Other reasons include lice, a fungal infection, or barbering (pulling off their own hair). Because you aren't sure of the cause of her hair loss and also since you can't find any mite treatment, she really does need to see a vet for this problem. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends to afford the vet, and I can give you some resources that may help. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Best Friends also has a list of resources that offer financial assistance on their website.

Why are my new guinea pigs itching and losing hair by their ears?

This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Why is my senior guinea pig going bald on her legs and belly?

Hello. Hair loss in an older female guinea pig is often related to cystic ovaries. The abnormal ovary produced hormones that cause the hair to fall out, usually on the trunk, back or belly. Sometimes, hairliss can be from over grooming, parasites, a thyroid condition, or if the Guinge is rubbing on somethin in the cage. Since she doesn’t sound itchy or inflamed, and she’s an older female, i would be suspicious of cystic ovaries. I would recommend taking Guinge to see a veterinarian who can do a physical exam, feel her belly for possibly cystic ovaries, and if needed do an ultrasound to identify and assess the ovaries. If they are indeed cystic, they can either be treated surgically with removal of the ovaries, or with injections of hormones to reduced the cyst size and activity (though these injections need to be given every 4 weeks or so). Ideally you'd get the piggies a vet visit along with a deworming depending on the type of worms they have. However if you absolutely can't care for them, afford dewormer, or they continue to worsen, then surrendering to a local shelter may be best.

I'm sorry Snuggle Bug is having trouble. Hair loss in Guinea Pigs can be from a number of things. Lice or mites are the most common and we can also see endocrine problems associated with ovarian issues. Your piggie needs to see a vet to get the right diagnosis and meds. There is not a safe over the counter option you can use.

Why is my guinea pig losing hair, itchy, and acting depressed?

Poor Cookie! She should be looked at by a vet as soon as possible. Hair loss and itching can be caused by skin mites or certain fungal infections in guinea pigs. Unfortunately, they are usually very itchy and can make guinea pigs feel very sick but are easily treated. Your vet can also rule out any hormonal imbalances that may be to blame. My guinea pig sheds a lot and has dandruff. Is it mites or normal?

I would be very suspicious that your guinea pig may be reinfected with mites. However they are also very susceptible to ring worm which causes hair loss as well. I would make sure that you are supplementing with Vitamin C and then I would encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian. Make sure to sterilize his cage well multiple times during treatments and make sure he does not have contact with other animals. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.
