My guinea pig has matted paws and long nails. What should I do?

My guinea pig Ella has these things on her paws and they stick to the paws. I don't know what it is or how to handle it, but I don't want to do anything with them because I don't want want to risk hurting her. Can you help me?

The first thing I see is that Ella needs her nails trimmed desperately. If you don't know how to do it yourself you will need to get her to a vet so they can do it for you and teach you how. You can also find YouTube videos on how to do this.

The second thing is that her foot is very red/irritated and it looks like she has fecal material stuck to it. I suspect she has a skin infection. This should not happen unless she is sitting in a dirty cage, has incorrect bedding and/or a cage with a wire bottom. I suggest you review your husbandry carefully to make sure you are doing everything correctly. The best bedding is Care Fresh.

While you are waiting to take her to a vet, I suggest you soak her feet in a dilute betadine solution for 5 minutes twice a day. After soaking, dry the feet very well before putting her back into a clean cage.

    Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mimi. She appears to need her nails trimmed. I would take her to the veterinarian for the nail trim. Then if the technician feels the red area is problematic, you can schedule an examination with the doctor. If all she needs is the trim, you will know this as well. I hope this information helps!

Hi. First, thanks for taking such good care of Ralph! It sounds like you’re doing a great job trying to fix a problem you were handed. The soaking and topical dressing sounds good and should help. However, the hanging scab of tissue there is likely to get caught on things again or trap debris in the wound. It needs to be removed. It would be best to remove it with some local anesthetic for pain reliever and also in a controlled environment where it can be cleaned and bleeding can be well controlled. Also, pododermatitis (infection and inflammation of the feet) can extend into the bones and can be hard to control without interventions like surgery and medications like antibiotics and pain medication. Therefore, a trip to the veterinarian is really the best thing for Ralph at this stage. Check AEMV.org to find an exotic mammal vet near you. Good luck!

My new guinea pigs have red, puffy feet. Is it serious? How to help?
Hello, Guinea pigs can develop pododermatitis, or infections on the bottom of the feet, from standing on hard or wire surfaces. It's difficult to tell from the picture if the feet are abnormal or not. Check all four feet on both of the pigs to check for swellings, flaking, or changes in color. These are signs they need to be seen by a vet. Guinea pigs are very skittish prey animals, and it can take some time to earn their trust. Avoid loud noises or sudden movements. Spending time near them and being still, such as when reading or watching tv, can help them get used to being around you. My guinea pig has foot spurs. How can I safely remove or treat them?
Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This does appear to be spurs as you stated. It is a type of hyperkeratosis (overgrowth of skin cells). They are not harmful in most cases so you can elect to do no treatment as long as they are not causing Oreo any harm. If you want to remove them you can use some human nail clippers to trim the excess - be careful not to trim too close to the skin or you may cause bleeding and subsequent infection. Hope this helps. Why is my guinea pig's nail black? Should I take her to the vet?
This may be due to a nail bed infection, or a subungal (under the nail) bleeding due to the nail getting caught on something. It would be best to take Genna to a vet, so they can better evaluate this and help resolve it. Some of these cases require removal of the nail and she may need specific medication. For now, you can soak the foot in a little salt water for 15 minutes twice a day. This will help to draw out swelling and reduce infection. I hope that helps and Genna gets better soon.

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Hamtaro's ear- from the pictures you sent, it looks very red and inflamed. Ear mites may be a cause as well as fungal infections. A veterinarian can rule out ear mites with an ear cytology sample (basically a swab or sample of material from the ear) and a fungal culture of the hair near or around the ear. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause. I would try and keep the area clean for now. Mild cleansing cloth or 3% hydrogen peroxide to the affected area may help until a diagnosis can be made with your veterinarian. I hope this helps and best of luck to you!
