How to tell if my guinea pig has heart or lung problems early?

A guinea pig owner could have a stethoscope but, without proper training, the owner may not be able to identify problems. If there is a concern for heart and lung disease, a veterinarian should do an examination to determine the cause and if treatment is needed.

It isn't "necessary", just strongly recommended. Any pet should be examined upon arriving home to confirm good health or to diagnose and treat any preexisting conditions. Yearly exams are also recommended for much the same reason.

Hello. Pneumonia can be quite common in Guinea Pigs. Jasper's lungs may have sounded fine, but he should have had x-rays done to make sure there are on problems in the lungs. Yes, you are correct. Hooting can be a symptom of heart disease in guinea pigs. I suggest you take Archie to a veterinarian that is well versed in treating guinea pigs to get him examined. This is something that you need to get diagnosed as soon as possible in order to start treatment (if any is available for whatever ailment he has). It may be nothing but it is better to be safe than sorry. Thans for reaching out about your guinea pig. It sounds as if he has an upper respiratory (and possible lower respiratory) infection. A veterinary visit is recommended to provide a diagnosis and treatment plan. The sooner the better, especially with the bleeding from the nose. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Carmello and including photos (but pictures do not show any problems). Upper and lower respiratory infections are common and can cause congestion (sounds). Heart disease is not uncommon in middle aged/older guinea pigs also. A veterinary visit would be a good idea. Warm ears could be an indication of a fever. Monitor food and water intake, monitor noises and see if you can locate to a certain area or situation. Good luck.

If the cough is just very occasional and Daisy is otherwise acting normally I would not be too concerned at this time. If however, the cough is increasing in frequency (more than a couple times a day), if Daisy is not eating well, and/or if she has eye or nasal discharge I would recommend taking her to the vet to be examined. Guinea pigs are prone to getting upper respiratory infections that can lead to pneumonia so if the problem progresses you should have her checked out. I hope this helps.
