My guinea pig is fat, pear-shaped, and can't jump. Is she pregnant?

I recently got a guinea pig who is a male (or at least what I was told) and he seems to be getting fatter. He looks a bit pear shaped and he won't let me touch his stomach. He's also having trouble jumping on and off of his hidey. I think he could actually be a she and is pregnant. I'm only 13 years old so I'm not sure.

Well, the first thing you'll need to do is figure out whether or not this is a male or female. There are lots of images available on guinea pig sexing and guinea pig anatomy so that you will be able to figure this out most likely. In terms of the symptoms you've reported, I would have to see pictures and perform a physical exam to give you my take. It sounds like you could be right, but there are also many other reasons for both pain and swelling in the abdomen. I would recommend having you and your parents bring him to a veterinarian comfortable treating small mammals. Hope this makes sense.

My guinea pig is gaining weight. Could she be pregnant? How to tell.

Well, guinea pigs gestation period is about 65 days, and of course she has to have some contact with a male. In the past, I have been able to tell if they are pregnant by palpation. Also, if you gingerly placer your hands on either side of her belly you may be able to feel moving piglets. If she is an adult and has never had a litter please take her to see a veterinarian. Female guinea pigs can have a very tough tough me delivering if their pelvis has matured completely. Good luck to you and Rosey.

My guinea pig's rear is swollen. Should I take him to the vet?

It is hard to tell from the photo but the swelling may just be his testicles they can retract them, so sometimes you won't see them. If there are 2 swellings then it will be tested, if not or you are unsure best to have it checked at the vets.

Unfortunately we cannot diagnose pregnancy without examining a pet in person. If they were always supervised together and you did not see any mating occur then not likely, but if they were unsupervised it is always a possibility. If you want to know for certain a visit to the vet is needed.

My guinea pig has creamy pee and big belly. Is it a bladder infection?

Some guinea pigs can have problems with a urinary infection and/or bladder stones that can cause their urine to look like as you described. This is not normal. My young guinea pig is losing weight and her private area is swollen.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. Poor Pinky. You can see a swollen vulva when in heat, but she is still quite young. Typically guinea pigs do not become sexually mature until they are two months of age, and she is still younger than that. That makes me wonder if there is something else going on with her, and the lethargy also points to a possible illness. If her vulva is swollen, she could have an infection like a UTI. I'd take her into the vet first thing tomorrow for a health check. I hope this helps!
