My young guinea pigs are attacking the new babies. What to do?

Thanks for reaching out. Not all animals get along. The biggest question is are they fighting or trying to establish hierarchy. Separate then for now and introduce them slowly in a neutral territory. Neutering them to lower testosterone might help. You should contact the store, to see if they can help also.

Congratulations on your new guinea pigs! They are adorable! Pups should start nursing during the first 24 hours and will continue to do so for about 3 weeks. During this time they will also start to experiment with solid food, so offer the pups fresh alfalfa hay and alfalfa pellets. You can also offer them regular timothy hay and fresh fruits such as oranges and bell peppers, which are high in vitamin C. The water bottle should be positioned so that the babies can easily reach the spout. Ensure the cage is large enough for all the adults and pups, and place it in a quiet area of the house, away from direct sunlight. Don't be afraid to start handling the pups early. This will help to socialize them with humans easier. Don't try to handle them when they are sleeping or nursing, but other than that you can try to handle them for a few minutes each day. I would advise taking them to a vet within the first 3 weeks in order to determine their sex. Boys and girls should be separated at the 3 week mark as accidental pregnancies can occur as early as 3-4 weeks. Similarly, I would separate the father now if you haven't done so already. As long as the cage is large enough and you introduce them gradually, you should be able to house 3 boars together. Be sure to provide additional bowls, toys and hides to prevent resource protection. Monitor for signs of aggression and separate them if necessary.

In addition to the big cage, provide adequate numbers of food/water bowls, toys and hides to prevent resource protection or food related aggression. If this doesn't help, you may need to separate the bully. You can try reintroductions after a week or two of separation.

Usually siblings raised together will be able to live together. It sounds as if you have one overly dominant female though. You can try keeping them in a larger cage with additional bowls, bottles, toys and hides. This may give them enough "elbow room" which may decrease the squabbling. If not, you may need to separate them for a few days. A gradual reintroduction can be tried, but if they continue to fight, permanent separation may be the only option.

You can get a young pig or one closer in age. Which ever you choose, have her examined by your veterinarian to confirm good health. Introduction should be gradual. Begin by having them in separate cages side by side. This way they can see, hear and smell one another but have no physical contact. Once they are acclimated, you can gradually introduce them for short periods of time under supervision. Clean and rearrange the cage you choose so it appears to be "neutral ground for both pigs. Rub some of the bedding from your first pig onto the new one before introduction. This scent transfer will help acclimation.
