Are there any toxic leaves or branches I shouldn't give my gerbil?

I would not give Jelutong wood to a gerbil as it has gum that may be detrimental to your gerbil. Meranti has been reported to cause eye, throat, and skin irritation, so I am not sure if this would be a good idea for giving to a gerbil to chew. You may try giving him bamboo or coconut shell for a chew toy.

Those things should be safe to chew on as long as they are clean. Egg carton should not be treated with any stains or chemicals. T-shirts need to be clean, a concern would be if they chew and ingest. Popsicle sticks should be fine. Newspapers generally use non-toxic inks but can possibly stain fur if gets wet and on the fur. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Remy. Plants must be non toxic, including stems, leaves and root. Soil could also be a problem, as contains bacteria and needs to be potted and watered. Wood used to build toys and the cage, must also be non-toxic and aromatic. Even if non-toxic, wood can easily be chewed, is porous and therefore difficult to disinfection. That is why wood is not recommended to build cages. Good luck.

It would depend on the species of vine being offered. Certain woods, such as Apple, Ash, Sycamore and Willow, are safe for gerbils to chew on. Gerbils like to burrow, so the layer of bedding should be 5-6 inches deep.

Supportive care may be indicated. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or difficulty breathing. The toxin (persin) in an avocado can cause heart damage, so Roger will need to be monitored closely for the next several days.
