My gerbil has squinted eyes and looks high. What's wrong with him?

Your gerbil may be quite sick or possibly injured. Without an exam, it is difficult to determine what the underlying cause may be. If he will allow, gently open his mouth and check his teeth for overgrowth or misalignment. This could affect his appetite which, in turn, could lead to the other symptoms. If his teeth are too long, your veterinarian can trim them. If they appear normal, there may be something else causing his symptoms. Ideally, Zach should be physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose and treat any infection or injury.

I would be concerned about then possibility of an abdominal tumor or fluid accumulation in the abdomen. However, fluid accumulation does not have a good prognosis either. I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. If there is a large tumor they may be able to feel it and help guide you with quality of life decisions. All of the symptoms you described are very worrisome, and could indicate that there is something underlying causing Coco to be unwell. As they are all very vague symptoms that can be caused by a number of things including illness, infection, injury, etc, it would be best to bring Coco to a local vet to have her examined and see what is causing it.

Peluchi should see a vet. I doubt it is anything contagious so handling him should not a be a problem. Still children should wash their hands after touching him. It may be a cyst but it could also be a tumor.

If he continues to squint the eye, then I would recommend to take him to the vet to get his eye stained to look for a scratch. Hello, Many small rodents already naturally carry the bacteria that causes upper respiratory infections, but the bacteria can overgrow when they have another illness that is suppressing their immune system, are under some stress (such as a move), or in unclean conditions with poor diet. It sounds like in your case, it's more likely to be one of the first two reasons. We generally use a combination of two antibiotics to tackle this difficult bug- most commonly, a combination of enrofloxacin and doxycycline. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Maintain a stable temperature and keep him as stress free as possible. If his symptoms persist, a veterinary exam will be needed.
