My ferret has oral cancer. How to manage his pain and comfort?

Poor Gannan! It would be great if at a bare minimum you could get some pain medication on board for him. Hopefully your vet will dispense an anti-inflammatory or opiate pain medication to you so that you can treat his pain during this tough time. There are very inexpensive options out there for pain meds and this is what I suggest to people who don't have a lot of money to spend or who don't believe in euthanasia.

Common tumors in ferrets include insulinomas (tumors of the pancreas), tumors on the spleen, and tumors on the adrenal glands as well as lymphoma. The prognosis for each of these varies from weeks to years and depends on the stage the tumor is in. Unfortunately ulcerated tumours are incredibly painful and analgesia will do little to help. If it cant be removed and cant heal you have limited options. Personally I would consider quality of life carefully and consider euthanasia. Othet management options would be to try orobase cream which makes a protective film over the open area and alleviates pain, but the cat would have to be amenable to you applying it. You could consider having an oesophageal feed tube placed so you can bypass the mouth completely whilst it heals. These tubes are usually temporary but there are linger term versions that allow you to put feed into the stomach directly. Consider carefully though as quality of life should be the overall deciding factor.

This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection or possibly to a gengivostomatitis (inflammatory, allergic, infective). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed. Thanks for reaching out about Willy. An abscessed tooth or neoplasia are the most likely causes. Starting with dental radiographs would be a good idea. If infected tooth root, tooth needs to be extracted to properly treat, a culture should be submitted as Baytril (enrofloxacin) doesn't treat all infections. A tumor is much more concerning. You probably need to follow through with some diagnostics to properly identify and treat. Good luck.
