Is mineral oil safe for my ferret's hairball or constipation?

I would not suggest using Vaseline or mineral oil for your cat. These products can contain substances that are harmful when ingested. Your vet should have a product similar to the one you've been buying and if not ask them to order Laxatone. I would only recommend giving your cat VET approved medications and supplements. Human doctors and pharmacists may be well intentioned, but they are not familiar with feline anatomy and what could possibly hurt them. ALWAYS talk to your vet first.

The mineral oil is ok if she will eat (as long as you are not forcing it down) but just so you know, the oil will literally just drip out her butt and you will have a terrible mess to clean up. I know from first hand experience. Mineral oil is not absorbed by their system so it will pass through literally unchanged. I personally would not use it. You are better off feeding the canned pumpkin to help push out any stools. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

Mineral oil is unlikely to cause aspiration pneumonia if it is swallowed normally by the pet. If it's vomited and inhaled then, yes, it certainly can cause serious illness, including potentially aspiration pneumonia, however at this point there isn't much that could be done by a veterinary professional unless she has vomited and is showing signs of pneumonia (coughing, breathing difficulties, lethargy, etc) which won't develop for at least 24 hours after vomiting and inhaling. Making her eliminate the mineral oil by inducing vomiting is not indicated, since this will (obviously) increase the chances of aspiration. To answer your question, "How will I know if she's OK?", you'll know she's OK if you don't see the symptoms described by Dr. Anstaett below. If you don't see any of these issues, you'll know everything is fine. And in the future, the recommended product (Laxatone) is a much safer way to encourage hairballs to pass.

Thans for reaching out about Hela. Ferratone is a product that works as a laxative, usually for the treatment and possible prevention of hairballs. Ferrovite is a vitamin supplement. If using a good quality ferret food, additional vitamins are probably not needed as the food is well supplemented. The emu oil is basically a fat/energy/calorie source as is probably not necessary. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Olive oil can be used to help normalize bowel movements but too much can lead to diarrhea. I would recommend using 1 tablespoon of olive oil on the food with each meal. I would not recommend this for recurrent bouts of constipation as there may be an underlying condition that needs medical attention. Olive oil is safe for cats and if you notice that Tiger develops diarrhea, discontinue the olive oil. I hope this helps! I would recommend having Masha evaluated by her veterinarian. Long haired cats should only have 3-4 hairballs per year. Any more than that can actually indicate gastrointestinal disease. She will likely need bloodwork and possibly an abdominal ultrasound. If there is a problem such as inflammatory bowel disease for example, she can be managed with medications and perhaps a prescription diet. I hope this information helps you and Masha!

Hello, so sorry to hear that Luna is vomiting. Vomiting is ferrets is very serious. Even though you don't think she may have gotten into anything, ferrets are very sneaky....... I am most concerned that she could have a foreign body stuck in her intestines which is causing the vomiting. I have removed many ear plugs, door stoppers and hair ties from ferret intestines! The other option is that she could have a hairball. Regardless of the underlying cause, vomiting is not normal. If your vet decides there is no foreign body, then they can at least give her some medication to stop the vomiting, treat her for hairballs (if needed) and get her back to normal.
