Why is my dwarf hamster losing fur and has inflamed genitals?

It is difficult to tell exactly from the picture you provided but I think the area you are concerned with maybe your hamsters testicles. It is normal for testicles to descend and the hair of the scrotum be thinner than the hair on the rest of the body. Depending on the age of your hamster this could be what is going on. This is probably a disease related to old age, it's not uncommon to see loss of hair and inflamed skin in older hamsters, sometimes it's connected to a tumor as well, which is very common at this age.

Hair loss and skin infection in hamsters is most commonly caused by either ringworm, a bacterial infection or skin mites. This could also be caused by trauma to the head, especially if there is another hamster in the enclosure. It is also important to note that the life span of a hamster is about 2 years so Flash is considered ‘geriatric’. It would be a good idea if you had him checked out by your veterinarian to ensure nothing else too serious is going on. I hope this helps. Typically hair loss in hamsters comes with age. Older hamsters can lose their hair due to a lack of protein (less than 16%) or iron in their diet. Other hamster illnesses can cause hair loss including sarcoptic mange, demodex mites, ringworm or disease such as kidney or Cushing’s disease. When you can get him to a vet for an exam I suggest you do so. In the meantime I suggest that you make sure he has a high quality diet and cut back on cereals if you are giving him any. You can give him one drop of cod liver oil daily. Thank you for posting this question. My suspicion is that S’more may have always had a few mites, but his immune system kept them under control. Stress of moving to a new environment may have weakened his immune systems and allowed the mites to become more abundant and damaging. Of course this is all just a possibility. Other concerns like bacterial skin infection or ringworm are all possibilities as well. Regardless I suspect that the stress likely played a role in the process. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. Based on their physical examination they will recommend a treatment plan. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. It is a little difficult to see in the photo, but there is what appears to be a small area of scabbing and hairloss, both of which are patchy on the hip. This can be caused by a skin infection, certain cancers, fungal infections, or skin mites which are very common in hamsters. These mites live within the hair follicles rather than cage surfaces, so cleaning the cage will not get rid of any of the possible causes. Mochi should be seen by a vet who can perform some quick tests on this area of skin to determine the underlying cause and start her on the appropriate treatment. In the meantime, to keep her more comfortable, you can gently trim her nails to keep her from traumatizing herself as she scratches. I hope this helps!

Thanks for reaching out about Biddy. Is Biddy new? Could it have been a fight with another animal? Hair loss, swollen and scabbed sounds like a wound. This could be parasitic, bacterial, fungal, endocrine and more. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Do not apply anything topical such as Neosporin as some of these medications can be ingested and cause problems. Good luck.
