My chinchilla is sneezing with a runny nose. Does he need a vet?

Pet's info: Exotic | Unknown - Exotic | Male | unneutered | 4 lbs

My chinchilla keeps on sneezing and his nose is running. I don't have enough money to take him to the vet, I think he might have an (UPI) and is their a way I can reverse this from him getting worse. I just noticed he started doing this last night and I'm getting highly worried about him. He lives alone, and I don't want nothing to happen to my baby he's about 3-4 years old. Can you please help me out and giving me tips on him getting better with out taking him to a vet?!? Please

An upper respiratory infection in a chinchilla can be very serious. Left untreated, it can quickly progress to pneumonia. There isn't anything you can do or give at home to help him recover. He should be examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating chinchillas to confirm your suspicion of a UTI. Chillie will likely need antibiotics and supportive care to aid in recovery. Discuss payment plans or alternative financing such as CareCredit (www.carecredit.com) with your veterinarian. Financial assistance may be secured through local charities or Red Rover (www.redrover.org).

Unfortunately these are signs that are likely to be due to a moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to an infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. Anytime a rodent such as a chinchilla stops eating and drinking for any significant length of time it is a definite problem. I would recommend taking Chilly in to the vet for a physical exam and some preliminary blood work. They will also be able to provide you with some Critical Care, which is a powdered formulation for syringe feeding of rodents and rabbits.

Why is my chinchilla rubbing its eye with pus and hair loss?

Poor Mr.chew. I would recommend taking him to a vet for assessment of his eye. I would be concerned that a corneal ulcer has developed. A corneal ulcer happens when their is injury to the eye. This can be from a scratch or any type of trauma. If the eye is infected or has an ulcer then mr.chew will need antibiotic eye drops. I would recommend warm compress with a wash cloth to keep the discharge removed from the eye and it will help keep the eye open.

Based on what you are describing it sounds as if your chinchilla is very ill. Because these animals are so small, anorexia for even a few days can be very dangerous. I would recommend taking him in to be evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. He may need a special Critical Care diet and fluids to get back to normal.

Thanks for reaching out about Gerat. The most likely cause is mycoplasma, which is a bacteria problem. Antibiotics can often improve clinical signs, but often is not curable, so this could be an on-again/off-again problem. A veterinary visit is required to prescribe to appropriate antibiotics.
