Why is my bunny's urine white or cloudy? Should I be worried?

Hello there! Rabbit urine can be a rainbow of colors and still be normal. Rabbits excrete a large amount of minerals in their urine, like calcium, which can be whitish in color. Their urine also changes color based on what they eat - for example, a rabbit that eats a lot of carrot or sweet potato in a day will have dark orange colored urine. Milky white urine is probably nothing to worry about, but if Blacky is exhibiting any other symptoms (like anorexia or diarrhea), or you see any mucous-like substances or red streaking (potentially blood) in the urine, be sure to visit your vet right away. If your bunny's urine is milky/cloudy, that means she has more calcium in her diet than her body can use. The underlying cause is consuming too much alfalfa hay or pellets. If you are feeding alfalfa hay or pellets I suggest you stop feeding that and switch to timothy or orchard grass hay (or a combination thereof). Hay should make up the majority of the diet and she should be getting very little pellets. It is very normal for rabbits to have "milky urine" as they excrete a significant amount of calcium in their urine. It is also not unusual for their urine to be red-tinged, as a result of the porphyrins and plant pigments they excrete in their urine. I hope this is helpful!

The pellets appear normal. Rabbits have 2 types of stool. The ones pictured and cecotropes, or night stool which they ingest to absorb additional nutrients. The white substance is likely dried calcium from the urine. Rabbits excrete excess calcium in the urine, frequently giving it a white or cloudy appearance. This is normal and no cause for concern.

Hello, and thank you for your question. Bunny urine usually oxidizes the longer it is exposed to air, so it is normal for it to turn a shade of orange-pink as in the photo. However, if you notice she is urinating in unusual spots, or if she is acting off or eating or pooping less, then I would recommend seeking veterinary attention. It may be related to a urinary tract infection, bladder stones or crystals. In the meantime, ensure that Rose drinks plenty of water which will keep her urinating and flushing out any infection or crystals out of her bladder. You can do this by providing her usual green leafy veggies soaked in water for a few minutes before giving them to her. I hope this helps, and that Rose is well!

Hello. What you are seeing are porphyrin pigments in the urine. This is perfectly normal & may come & go. Make sure his pelleted diet is fresh & appropriate for rabbits. Rabbits absolutely need hay & grasses to live well & should be available to Snow all day long. You can feed other green leafy plants such as broccoli, cabbage, chard, parsley, celery leaves, watercress, kale, endive & carrot & beet tops. Thank for reaching out about Violet. A white thicker urine is sometimes an indication of excess dietary calcium being excreted in the urine. Although, if she if pregnant, extra calcium is necessary for fetal bone development and lactation. You should hold off adjusting the diet until after kits are weaned. Good luck.
