My bunny eats hay but won't eat its food pellets. Is this normal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | neutered | 3 years and 10 months old

Buddy hasn’t been eating much of his nuggets for the past few days. He is eating lots of his hay and grass and drinking, but not eating a lot of nuggets at all.

Thanks for reaching out about Buddy. It would be rare for dental disease to result in not eating pellets but yes eating hay. Is Buddy hypersalivating? Any swellings around the mouth, jaws? A veterinary visit is recommended to assess if the problem continues.
Good luck.
