How can I bond with my new hamster using treats safely?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female

So I got my hamster about a week ago and lately I’ve been trying to get it more comfortable with me and not be scared when I touch it so ive been giving it food like cucumbers and bananas and baby carrots in my hand and she will go up to my hand and take it without running away. Is that good?

Hello, and congratulations on your new hamster! Bear is such a cutie! I think it is just fine to give her small amounts of veggies and fruits to get her bonded to you. However, I would stick to no more than a few small pieces each day, and reserve the rest of her diet as hamster pellets (ideally with no extra nuts or seeds). This will ensure she does not get too fat!

I hope this helps, and that Bear is doing well!
