When can I bathe my young guinea pig and how often should I do it?

A small amount of baby shampoo should be fine for a one time cleaning of your guinea pig. The water should be warm but not hot, like it would be for bathing a baby. You want to be sure that your guinea pig is dried thoroughly after the bath and is in an area that is not drafty as the big risk with bathing can be getting chilled afterwards when they are wet.

Bathing guinea pigs regularly is not recommended. If you "need" to bathe him, use a mild shampoo approved for small animals and be sure to dry him thoroughly afterwards. A pet wipe or plain, unscented baby wipe can be used to clean feet, bottom or ears as needed. The problem with feeding Jackjack fruit as a source of vitamin C is that they are high in sugar and may cause diarrhea or predispose him to obesity. Peppers, broccoli, cauliflower and peas are vegetables that are high in Vitamin C. He can get these several times a week. For convenience though, most pet parents use Vitamin C drops. He could adjust to another guinea pig, but you would need to introduce them to one another gradually and provide a much larger cage. Typically, male siblings can be raised and housed together with very little squabbling. An unrelated male may result in bullying or aggression and injury.

Poor Cookie! She should be looked at by a vet as soon as possible. Hair loss and itching can be caused by skin mites or certain fungal infections in guinea pigs. Unfortunately, they are usually very itchy and can make guinea pigs feel very sick but are easily treated. Your vet can also rule out any hormonal imbalances that may be to blame. What cute pigs! It is always a good idea to have a vet examine any new pet so that you have an established relationship with a vet in case any health issues arise in the future. They can also look your pigs over and be sure they appear healthy!
