My uromastyx is twitching and has bloody discharge. Is he sick?

Keep him warm and as stress free as possible. If he is on loose substrate, switch him to slate, paper towels or reptile carpeting to prevent material from sticking to his vent. Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites.

I am so sorry that this is happening to Snickers, and thank you for the photos. If you haven't done so already, I would recommend contacting your veterinarian as I think that Snickers should go back for an examination. I didn't see if you had any diagnostic testing performed, but with the production of blood and the continued regurgitation, I would be concerned about an ulcer in the gastrointestinal tract (intestines) or potentially foreign material that is resulting in a blockage. There are some infectious diseases (bacteria, viruses, etc.) that can also result in bleeding. For diagnostic testing, your veterinarian would likely start with blood work to evaluate Snickers' organs and to look for signs of inflammation/infection. They may also recommend radiographs (x-rays) as this would help them to determine if there is a potential foreign body as well. If they cannot definitively tell, they may also recommend an ultrasound. I would recommend getting Snickers in as soon as possible, as reptiles are often much sicker than they let their owners believe. I wish you the best of luck.

Intestinal parasites or infection, blood from the urinary or reproductive tract or a cloacal problem are all possible and a veterinary visit is needed to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Uros may go off food due to food preference, low cage temps, illness or seasonal changes. It is not uncommon for them to go 5-7 days without eating occasionally. The respiratory symptoms may indicate infection or illness thus an exam with an experienced herp veterinarian would be recommended first to diagose and teat illness. In the meantime, confirm adequate temperature. Soak him in a warm 50/50 solution of water and unflavored Pedialyte for 15-20 minutes. Offer a variety of foods to stimulate his appetite. Try Gerber Stage one baby food. Choose a fruit or vegetable flavor and offer it through a syringe. Do not force feed him though.

There are multiple reasons for anorexia including intestinal parasites/infections, metabolic disease (liver, kidney), malnutrition, poor husbandry, stress and others. Check husbandry first, as uromastyx like it hot. You can try offering a meat flavored baby food via a syringe to give calories, and also to offer water. Thanks for reaching out about Baby and including photos. Could you include the radiograph? The arm does appear swollen. Calcium deficiencies and metabolic bone disease, are the most common. Has the UV bulb been changed in the last 6 months? Neurological problems can also cause twitching, so if the radiographs are normal, a comprehensive reptilian profile is probably the next step, as kidney disease can also cause tremors. Good luck.

The increased in urination and sort stool ay be due to an increase in fluid intake or eating succulent fruits and vegetables. The soft stool can also be due to intestinal parasites. Bladder stones are also possible and would cause straining to urinate which could in turn cause a prolapse of the penis. An exam with your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles would be recommended. Bloodwork and xrays may provide a different. If indicated, your vet can provide supportive care (fluids, antibiotics, deworming, etc) if indicated. In the meantime, keep him warm. Consider increasing ambient temperature in his enclosure by several degrees. Soak him daily in a warm 50/50 solution of water and an unflavored electrolyte replacement fluid. Decrease the amount fruit being fed. Make sure he continues to eat though.
