Can I give my turtle Tramadol? Is it safe with other medications?

Tramadol is safe for use in cats and a typical dose for a 20lb cat would be about 25mg, so 1/2 tablet. That is what is most commonly dosed for a 20lb cat. Before giving any medication to your cat that has not been prescribed to him, I would most certainly recommend contacting your veterinarian to discuss this prior to administering the Tramadol as I do not know the full medical history on Billy. There are some circumstances in which you should not give Tramadol so I would confirm with the primary veterinarian that normally sees Billy. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Poor Wookie. It is never a good idea to start a medication without having checked the patient before. All the medication have side effects and have to be carefully prescribed and given only for the appropriate disease. There are different medication against pain and Tramadol is one of those but recent studies suggest might not be as effective as we thought, there are other more effective medication. I recommend to have Wookie checked by your veterinarian to asses the level of pain and prescribed the correct medication taking in account all Wookie history and concurrent heath problems, if present. Tramadol and metacam can be given together. They are 2 different drugs with different mechanisms of action and different side effects. Metacam has a very narrow dose whereas tramadol has a wider, safer dose range. Metacam is an NSAID and can cause a variety of side effects, most notably gi ulceration and kidney injury. Dosing of both should be provided by your vet based on your pets health history and bloodwork. Monitoring of bloodwork is very important with metacam use. Tramadol and gabapentin are safe to give together. Tramadol comes in 50 mg tablets. The upper limit of the dosing range for a 78 pound dog is 150 mg. However, I rarely start with the high dose. I usually start with 50 mg every 8 hours and then increase to 100 mg if you feel it’s needed. Best of luck and I hope you find the reason tomorrow! I hope he improves quickly. Tramadol is metabolized in the liver and its metabolites are excreted in the urine. it is unlikely the smaller dog will be harmed by any tramadol in the urine. greater concern is the drinking of the urine itself. This may lead to stomach upset. Restrict access to dog wastes and provide plenty of fresh water. If the smaller dog seems excessively thirsty, a work up with your veterinarian is recommended. Unless he or she is exhibiting discomfort associated with the hip dysplasia, pain medication is likely not indicated. A joint supplement, weight control and regular exercise would be beneficial.

He should be fine but all animals can have a different reaction to medications so just monitor him closely for the next 4-6 hours. Too much tramadol can cause sedation or agitation, wobbliness, disorientation, vomiting, tremors and possibly seizures. He ingested the very top end of the dosage he could have for his weight. I suspect he will just be very sleepy.
