My turtle has a red mark on its mouth that won't come off. Injury?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Reptile | Aquatic Turtle | Female | unspayed | 13 years and 1 month old | 2.6 lbs

Hello. My turtle has a red stain/mark along her "lip" on the left hand side. Tried cleaning it with a qtip but it didn't come off. This must have appeared within the last 2-3 days. She lives outside in a filtered and heated pond with my other (male) turtle and they sometimes fight over food, she also randomly bites hard things. I give them kale/spinach/fruit and they hunt slugs, snails and other insects. She's acting completely normal and feeding fine. Is this an injury or is it something else?

Thanks for reaching out about Cheech and including a photo. The lesion appears superficial but needs to monitored. The pond appears a little murky which isn't necessarily a bad thing but probably contains more bacteria that could contaminate a lesion. You can continue to topically treat with a betadyne or iodine solution with a cotton tipped applicator. If the lesion progresses, a veterinary visit is recommended.
Good luck.
