Why is my red-footed tortoise limping, not eating, and acting weird?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Reptile | Tortoise | Female | unspayed

My red footed tortoise ( who I have had for many years) is acting very weird as well as she won’t eat and she’s limping with her back feet , she is normally very friendly and loves people but she sort of like hisses and doesn’t wanna be near people. To me this is very concerning

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about Candy cane's change in behavior. I'm concerned that limping on two legs could be a sign of spinal disease or a nutritional deficiency that can affect bone strength. Hissing could be a sign of pain or respiratory distress. I recommend taking Candy cane to a veterinarian as soon as possible.

I hope this is helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
