Why do my leopard geckos and salamanders try to escape? Is it normal?

I have a 2 leopard geckos and 2 western tiger salamanders, in each of my terrariums one of the 2 inhabitants often leans against the glass at the front, and looks like it is trying to get out.I was wondering if this is normal or is it a strange behavior?in each of my terrariums the other inhabitant does not try to escape ad looks content, so I would like to know if the ones that want to escape are normal, or is the content ones are normal, or if both behaviors are normal.causes for behavior 2plz

Thanks for reaching out. There are probably at least two possible answers. One, the animals are trying to escape, just to see what is on the other side. Two, the ones trying to escape are being harassed by the dominant ones and trying to escape.

Make sure the tank is large enough for him. Confirm proper environmental parameters as well (substrate, cage furniture, humidity, temperature, etc.). If even one parameter is "off" or if his water is dirty, it may cause stress and the desire to escape the enclosure.

Stress or illness are likely responsible. Placing dark colored paper around the lower 10-12 inches of the glass might decrease stress. If this doesn't seem to help, a veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.

Leopard geckos are nocturnal. He may be more active at night, while you are asleep. They spend most of the day in a secure place, such as the hide you have provided. He should have a hide on each end of the enclosure. Monitor the cage temp, as low temps can affect activity in reptiles.

Why is my 5-month-old Beardie glass surfing? What's his normal size?

He may want to get out for a bit. He may also see his reflection in the glass. An enclosure that is too small may cause stress which could account for the behavior. Check in and around the cage for any negative stimuli. Reduce or eliminate any if found. You can use a tank surround to limit his view. Plain paper taped to the tank about halfway up the sides also work. Take him out a couple times daily for some exercise and playtime. Be sure the cage is large enough for him and add a hide on both sides of the tank.

Occasionally is normal. If it is frequent, it may indicate infection, irritation, parasites or constipation. Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to definitively diagnose intestinal parasites. Look her over for any unusual redness, swelling or discharge. If you see anything suspicious, have her examined by your vet or an experienced herp vet.

Leopard geckos can generally co-exist with one another as long as they are male-female pairs or two/more females. They usually do not become territorial while they are young. That being said it is important to make sure they have enough space to escape each other and have more than one hiding area. .If you see bullying, you may need to separate them.
