My 11-month-old crested gecko hasn't shed yet. What should I do?

Crested geckos don't "need" UVB lighting as long as they are fed a diet adequate in vitamin D3. Soak or mist him with warm water to help facilitate shedding. The cloudiness may be related to the shed or it may be due to infection or trauma. An exam with your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles would be recommended if the cloudiness does not resolve after the shed is complete.

The "stickiness" can be affected by water spots or film on the glass, humidity, diet, illness or a stuck shed. You can't "make" a gecko shed, you can only support him through it by maintaining humidity, providing a moist hide and having appropriate tank furniture that he can rub against to remove shedding skin. Clean the glass using a 50/50 mix of water and plain vinegar. Sometimes, hard water spots remain on the glass after misting and this will affect adherence. Humidity that is too high will leave water on the glass, even if you can't see it, that will cause him to slip. It will also foster bacterial and fungal overgrowth. Cresties normally become less sticky during a shed. Exam his feet for stuck shed and soak him daily to remove any bits if necessary. Review the diet and confirm it is biologically appropriate. If he is lethargic, won't eat or has swelling or bruising on his feet or toes, have him examined by your veterinarian or an experienced herp vet.

This is not uncommon for a juvenile gecko. Be sure to provide a humid hide and soak her to prevent difficult sheds. Young geckos will shed more frequently than adults simply because they are growing at a faster rate.

You can soak him for 15-20 minutes in a warm bath to provide hydration as well as to aid in shedding. Do this 2 or three times weekly during a shed. Without an image or physical exam, it is difficult to determine if his coloration is due to illness or injury.

Your gecko may be getting ready to shed. The eyes turn cloudy and shed like the skin. Make sure there is enough moisture in Bandit's enclosure to allow for proper shedding. You can mist/spray the enclosure with water to help increase humidity. A vitamin deficiency could also cause this if it has lasted longer than a few weeks. You may want to start giving him some reptile supplements. There are many brands to choose from and a lot of reptiles need extra calcium supplemented in their diets. I hope this has helped. A heat lamp isn't necessary unless the room where the cage is located is cold. Cresties do just fine at room temperature. A UVB light source isn't necessary either as long as you feed a diet containing adequate levels of Vitamon D3. That said, either won't harm him and it is a matter of personal preference. Be sure to monitor cage temps to make sure they don't go too high. There was no image attached to this question. Age can be difficult to determine if you don't have a hatch date. The reason being that growth can be dramatically affected by diet and environment. Contact the PetSmart where he was purchased. They should have records from the source/breeder which should include a hatch date or age.
