My chameleon choked on crickets. Am I feeding the wrong size?

That's a good question, because you definitely risk Mushu choking if you feed these crickets. One option is small ants. These are safe to feed and are nutritious. It may take you having to dig-up your own prey and there should be various small bugs available in natural areas. I know natural areas may not be abundant in your area, but you should be able to find some exotic pet shops that can help you find some small bugs to feed Mushu. He looks healthy, but looks can be deceiving. Chameleons are very active to begin with, plus being in a new environment may be stressful for him. You can feed 5-7 crickets at each feeding. Gut load them for 24 hours prior to offering to maximize nutritional value. You can also offer dubia roaches, wax worms and butter worms. All prey should be no larger than the space between the eyes.

Offer appropriately sized prey, no bigger than the space between the eyes. Confirm proper temperature as well. Low temps can affect appetite and digestion in reptiles. Be sure to dust prey at every feeding with a multivitamin and calcium supplements. Gutloading prey for 24 hours will also maximize nutritional value. Do not be concerned if she refuses food for one day.

I think Ron Junior should be fine. Hopefully he is just full. If you are truly worried the only option I can give you is to take him to a reptile vet for an exam. One reason for open mouth breathing in reptiles is respiratory infection. It just may be coincidental that he started this breathing after eating so many crickets. The most common reason for illness in captive reptiles in improper husbandry. I suggest you make sure you have his housing, lighting, temperature, etc correct. A veterinary visit is recommended for multiple reasons: (1) Determine cause of loss of body condition which could be intestinal parasites or infection, metabolic disorders and others; (2) Review husbandry and diet as optimal temperature, humidity and nutrition is needed for health. Thanks for reaching out about Zazu. A major concern would be aspiration of food making it difficult for Zazu to breath. A veterinary visit is highly recommended as soon as possible. Heat support, antibiotics and possibly anti-fungal medications, fluid therapy and nutritional support are needed. Aspiration of the trachea to clean might also help.
