Why is my pleco's skin white and belly bloated after tank cleaning?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Bottom Feeder | Male | unneutered

Hi, I had a bettas fish and a clown pleco. A day after doing a complete cleaning of the tank, my better fish died and my pleco started acting weird. I tested the water. Ph 7, ammonia 0, nitrate 0, nitrite 0. He is not eating, his skin started to look like white, like shedding? And now is like coming off. Also, his belly is bloated. I attached pictures.

Thanks for reaching out. Did you use tap water and dechlorinate prior to the water changed? The dechlorinating solutions do not work immediately can take several hours to lower levels of chlorine and chloramines (typically in tap water). Did you match water temperatures? Temperature shock of even a few degrees can lead to death or depressed immune system. A veterinary visit is recommended for the pleco to assess health and recommend treatments.
Good luck.
