How big should a tank be to temporarily house goldfish fry safely?

A 5 gallon tank is insufficient for goldfish. They produce a larger than normal bio-load (wastes) that can quickly overwhelm a small tank. Ideally, one goldfish should be in a 20 gallon tank with an extra 10 gallons added per additional goldfish. The filter should be rated for at least twice the volume of the tank. They are likely succumbing to ammonia and/or nitrite toxicity. If you test the water, it is likely both parameters will be dangerously high. Perform a 50% water change. Use only conditioned water that is temperature matched to prevent further stress or shock. Goldfish are cold water fish and do best between 65 F and 72 F. Plain aquarium salt, NOT table or Epsom salt, can be used to reduce stress, improve gill function and aid in recovery. Dissolve 1 teaspoon per gallon in a cup or two of tank water and gently pour it into the tank. Treat for no more than 14 days then perform a partial water change to decrease salinity. A 5 gallon tank would be appropriate for one male Betta or a small school of Neons (3-5).

Hi, and thanks for your question. There is a general rule about it which is a rough estimate not to overcrowd your aquarium and avoid excessive production of feces and organic debris. The rule is one Inch per gallon, so in 10 gallons there should be ideally 10 inches of fishes in total. You should consider as well the presence of plants and gravel and any other sort of things, which decrease the water volume of 5-10% (so 10 liters are actually 9-9.5). This rule does not consider modern filtration systems. These fish suffer genetically from a certain grade of visual impairment, so overcrowding (especially competition for food) is not recommended. At the same time, please consider as well that schooling fish (like they are) should be kept in numbers, which means more space will be needed, so be generous.

Thanks for reaching out about Timothy and Lola. First suggestion is to get a large tank. The general rule of thumb is 1" of fish per 3 gallons of water. Test and correct water quality for pH, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. The better the filtration, the higher the bio-load. So better filtration or a second filter could help. Good luck.

The goldfish can get very big and may require a significantly larger tank as they grow and grow. As a rule of thumb, you need 1 gallon of water per inch of body length of fish. So if you have three 1 inch fish, you will need 3 gallons of water. I suspect you are at your max already in the smaller tank. Just so you know, most people do not have goldfish in tanks with tropical fish. You may consider getting two tanks One for your cold water fish like the goldfish, and one for your tropical fish that require a warm water temperature. For the goldfish I would suggest a minimum of a 20 gallon tank. For the Danio, I suggest to get a few more of these as they are schooling fish and a 10 gallon would be just fine. Without anything to use for scale, it is hard for me to tell how big your tank is, but in general it seems very small. Also, the water that is in the tank appears very cloudy right now, so that would be the first place to start. Water quality is very important, and will make or break your ability to house and care for fish. I would recommend getting a good filter system (you can visit a local pet store to assist you with brands in your area, as I am not familiar with what you can get in India). Be sure to bring the measurements (height, length, width) of your tank, or the gallons or liters so they can tell you what capacity of filter you will need. Everything else will depend on what types of fish you get - if you plan on getting multiple fish, they will need to be small - a general rule of thumb is one square inch of fish per gallon of water. Depending on the species you get, you may need to also get a bubbler to ensure there is enough oxygen in the water for them, and you will also likely need to get some sort of substrate for the bottom and cage furniture (different species have different air requirements, and some are secretive and like to hide). You may also need a water heater, depending on the species you would like to house. But, depending on how small your tank is, it may be hard to get a water heater that will fit. They need a much larger tank. A 20 gallon tank (properly cycled) suffice for several months. When full grown, a minimum 55-60 gallon tank with adequate filtration will be necessary for healthy fish. For now, maintain water quality via filtration and weekly partial water changes. These fish do best at temps between 65 F and 72 F but can tolerate colder temperatures as long as temperature swings are not too rapid.
