My betta fish's fin ripped during tank cleaning. What to do?

Hello! Please help. I was cleaning my betta fish’s tank and I think I accidentally ripped one of his fins. I feel awful. Is there anything I can/should do? Will he be ok?

As long as you maintain pristine water quality via filtration and regular partial water changes, he should heal up. Use only conditioned water that is temperature matched to prevent stress or shock. Bettas do best between 78 F and 80 F. Consider a product, such as Stress Coat, to promote healing.

Maintain pristine water quality. That's the cornerstone for healing and recovery. Use plain aquarium salt (NOT table or Epsom salt) as a general tonic to reduce stress, improve gill function, treat minor infection and aid in recovery. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon of water in a cup or two of tank water and gently pour it into the tank. Treat with salt for no more than 14 days then reassess fin condition. Perform partial water changes afterwards to decrease salinity. Use only conditioned water that is temperature matched to prevent stress or shock. Bettas do best between 78 F and 80 F.

As long as the damage is not too severe, they should regrow. Clean water is critical. Use a water conditioner such as StressCoat to aid healing. Be sure to maintain water temperature between 78 F and 80 F.

Given the right tank conditions and diet, she may regrow all or part of her fin. Maintain pristine water quality via filtration and regular partial water changes. Offer a healthy diet and minimize stress. It can take weeks to months, so be patient.

Check the strength of the current created by the filter. Bettas do best in very slow moving water. A strong current can actually damage long finnage. Be sure to use a conditioner at each water change. My preferences are Prime, NovAqua, AmQuel Plus, StressZyme or StressCoat. You can find these in the aquarium section of the local Petco. You don't need to use all of them though. A bit of plain aquarium salt (NOT table or Epsom salt) can also aid in healing. Dissolve up to 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon of water and treat for 10-14 days then reassess fin condition.

You can continue to use the bottled treatment as directed. Add a bit of plain aquarium salt (NOT table). As well to aid in recovery. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon of water in a cup of tank water and gently pour it into the tank. Treat for 10-14 days then reassess fin condition.

Why are my betta's fins shredded even though he's active and young?

Thanks for reaching out about Figi and including photos. The first thing that should be done is to test water quality for pH, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and temperature (highs and lows, day and night). Correct any problems as fin conditions are dependent on good water quality. Secondly, review diet, pellets should be only used for 2-3 months after purchase as vitamin C degrades quickly, and fish are dependent on dietary sources. No particular brand is scientifically proven to be a 100% all-they-need-diet, so brands should be varied at each purchase. If these not the problem, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan for parasites or infection. Good luck.

My betta fish has a skin gap from injury. Will it heal and grow back?

Thanks for reaching out. Fish heal pretty well but depends on the gape in the skin. But the important part is keeping the water as clean as possible, to decrease contamination of the wound. Make sure the nutrition level is high (fresh food). If the wound becomes angry or you notice white fluffy lesions (likely fungus), seek an examination with a veterinarian. If the wound is wide, seek a veterinarian sooner. Good luck.
