My puppy ate super fast. Is his stomach bloated, and is he okay?

My 8 week puppy ate a meal super fast and has a slightly distended belly. He’s peed since and is acting otherwise normal. Will he be ok?

It is pretty typical for puppies abdomens to look distended after eating whether they eat fast or not. It is more to do with the amount they are eating more than than the speed. Puppies abdomens can also be distended due to worms. If he has not been dewormed that should be done as soon as possible. Puppies should be dewormed every 3-4 weeks until they are 4 months old, then once monthly.

That being said, eating fast is not good for them for other reasons. They can swallow a bunch of air which can cause bloat. So, I recommend you either feed him smaller, more frequent meals or get him a special bowl that will slow down his eating (see link).

In this case, the belly all of the sudden gets big, about 20-40 minutes after eating. As long as your Ziggy is comfortable, not crying and his energy level is normal you just need to monitor him at home. The mild bloat should get better in 4-6 hrs time. Chronic abdominal distention in puppies in most cases is related to gastrointestinal worms. If Ziggy has not been de-wormed yet, please do it as soon as possible. You can buy worming medications at the vets but also in pet shops and online - you can get them over-the-counter.

My new Yorkie puppy has a big belly and breathes fast. Is he okay?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It isn't unusual for puppies this young to have a big belly after eating. I would make the meals smaller and feed him more frequently. You are also correct that he likely has intestinal parasites, deworming him will help but it will take time. If his stomach enlarges enough it can put pressure on the diaphragm and change breathing patterns. That's why I would feed small meals frequently for a while. Otherwise puppies do breath faster than adults, especially when sleeping. Since he is otherwise doing well I would just watch him closely and follow your vet's vaccination and deworming schedule. Hi !Does Leia eat very quickly ? If so, have you tried feeding her using one of those slow feeding bowls ? It might be an idea. Also she should be on three meals per day at least. There isn’t generally any problem with it except that Brixy may be more likely to regurgitate that meal right back up (looking almost the same!) Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Stomach distension from eating too much food can be dangerous. As long as Harley is comfortable and does not show signs of weakness, panting, discomfort you can monitor him at home. However, if his abdomen becomes very bloated and your puppy becomes weak and subdued, you should take him to your local vets as an emergency. Dogs which are fed large meals once daily are at higher risk of developing GDV, so it will be better if Harley gets fed smaller meals twice a day.

Is my puppy's belly big after milk replacer normal or concerning?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is likely normal but I would feed less formula at each feeding and increase the frequency or number of feedings. That way he is getting smaller amounts and his stomach won't get so distended. Be sure to contact your Vet for a deworming protocol soon. I also suggest weaning bottle fed puppies sooner due to the constipation or diarrhea affects of formula. Have a good day!

Why is my 6-month-old puppy's stomach hard and swollen after eating?

Awww, she’s a cutie!! If she’s still acting normally... seems comfortable, is energetic and ready to play if prompted, and hasn’t seemed nauseated or like she’s trying to vomit, I would just give her some time. She may have eaten really quickly and have some gas buildup or something of that nature. If she starts retching like she wants to vomit, or if she seems very dumpy and lethargic, take her to the vet. You can check her heart rate as well. Her heart rate at rest should not be faster than 130 beats per minute. If it is faster than that when she seems calm, take her in.
