A common cause of cough in a young dog could still be kennel cough- it is very contagious and can even be transmitted on your clothes if you touched a contaminated object/person. The most common disease causing cough is a viral infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.

A cough can be caused by respiratory issues including lower airway disease or upper airway disease like a collapsing trachea. It can also be a sign of heart disease. Teddie needs to be assessed by a veterinarian to determine the cause of the cough and for recommendations to be made about what could benefit him from a medical perspective. They may want to perform x-rays to assess his heart and lungs.

That could be an early stage sign of tracheal collapse, or there may be a inflammation of the trachea or first airways (throat). Tracheal collapse is quite common in yorkies and is usually diagnosed by performing a radiographic evaluation of neck and chest. I would recommend a check up as if otherwise the signs are due to an inflammatory disease, anti-inflammatory and possibly antibiotics are required. With her age I recommend letting a veterinarian listen to her lungs. It can be heart or respiratory. If she has a murmur you may want to consider taking her to a cardiologist to have her heart evaluated. The most common cause of coughing like this is an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough, although other problems are also possible - including bronchitis, heart disease, or allergies. You can try giving her a spoonful of honey to help soothe her throat, or bringing her into the bathroom with you with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity often help to soothe coughing and relieve symptoms like this. If the cough has not improved by tomorrow morning, I would recommend having Abby examined by a vet. He/she can listen to her heart and lungs to make sure the problem isn't serious, and prescribe antibiotics and cough suppressants if needed to treat the infection and make her more comfortable.
