Is my Yorkie's bad odor linked to bloody vomit and diarrhea?

Hello. I am so sorry that Bailey is so sick. The next step is to ultrasound her abdomen. This will show problems like thickened intestines that can not be seen on an x-ray. If something concerning is seen, sometimes a diagnosis can be made just by looking at the ultrasound, but sometimes a biopsy may be required. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Lucy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I noticed in one of those pictures that his stool is really diarrhea and is black (which usually means a sign of bleeding). Vomiting and diarrhea can occur secondary to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, parasites, among other possibilities. In addition, black stools can be indicative of bleeding into the small intestine or stomach which can happen secondary to an ulcer for instance. Bloody urine can be the result of an infection, stones, tumors, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least they can start him on medications to make him feel better and check his hydration status. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. Poor Baby. This could be parvovirus but usually parvo doesn't wax and wane like this. If Kyle hasn't been fully vaccinated, I would have him tested for parvo to ensure it is negative. I would also make sure they test him for different parasites including giardia. Giardia can be difficult to get rid of and they can easily reinfect themselves. The rotting meat smell is likely due to the blood in his stool. I would also feed him a bland or sensitive stomach diet. If you recently opened up a new bag of food before all this started, I would throw that bag out as it could be a bad bag. If he doesn't have any parasites, I would talk to your vet about additional diagnostics like a pancreatitis test, blood work, and x-rays. This may give your vet more information about what is going on and how to treat him. I hope this helps!

Hello. I am sorry that Daizee isn't feeling well. If she is vomiting and having diarrhoea, and bloodwork and radiographs were normal, this typically means she either has gastritis or pancreatitis. Both of these conditions would result in normal blood and x-rays, but cause the diseases that you are seeing. Often-times these animals need to be in hospital, on IV fluids and stronger pain meds then can be sent home. They often also need multiple medications to protect the gut, and if she is vomiting she can only get these by IV, which means she needs to be in hospital. I would recommend a visit to a 24 hour or emergency clinic if your clinic isn't open, or go back to your vet and discuss if Daizee needs IV fluids and IV medications. Good luck with Daizee!

You are correct that vomiting and diarrhea are broad symptoms that could be caused by a number of diseases. The most common causes are gastroenteritis (stomach upset from eating something she is not accustomed to), pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas, often caused by high fat foods), a foreign body in the gastrointestinal tract, or others such as toxin ingestion or organ dysfunction. You can try to withhold food for 12-24 hours and re-introduce small amounts of a bland diet such as boiled lowfat chicken breast or hamburger with rice. If she continues to vomit and have diarrhea despite being fasted, she should be evaluated.

I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
