Why does my Yorkie have bad breath if I can't brush her teeth?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 6 years and 7 months old | 13 lbs

My six-year-old Yorkie- 13.5 lbs-whom I have had only 4 months lately has a foul odor coming from her breath. Her diet consists of Blue Freedom, grain-free food. Her treats are by Blue as well (and Greenies) She is a touch-me-not when it comes to her paws & teeth. So I can't brush her teeth. I wonder if the boiled chicken I am keeping in a baggie and give to her from time to time might be the cause of the odor? Maybe a week is too long to keep it in the frig? Help. Thanks

The foul odor is most likely related to dental disease and infection. It is likely that Lila has dental disease as this is very common in Yorkies. You should have her examined by your veterinarian so a dental procedure can be scheduled. Many times this dental infection requires the extraction of teeth to fully resolve the issue. Dental infection is painful and can lead to other systemic issues so I'd recommend having Lila checked out soon.
