Why does my dog have bad breath and hate his mouth touched?

The foul odor is most likely related to dental disease and infection. It is likely that Lila has dental disease as this is very common in Yorkies. You should have her examined by your veterinarian so a dental procedure can be scheduled. Many times this dental infection requires the extraction of teeth to fully resolve the issue. Yorkies notoriously have extremely bad teeth and brushing at this stage will very likely not any difference in the condition of Tabias' teeth. He will need a veterinary exam and likely a professional dental cleaning first before any brushing his teeth at home will help prevent or slow down tartar accumulation on his teeth. The bad breath is a sign of bacterial growth under the gum line and in tartar on your dog's teeth. Please make an appointment with your veterinarian for a dental exam.

Halitosis is the word we use for bad breath. It is most commonly caused by dental disease. In order to determine the severity of his dental disease, they will need to perform a dental under anesthesia so they can fully evaluate each tooth under the gumline. If they find a broken, painful or infected tooth, they will be able to remove that tooth and resolve Luckyboy's pain. It's not uncommon in dogs, if his teeth looks dirty and full of tartar he probably needs a scale and polish dental treatment at the vets, if the teeth look very clean then it probably comes from the stomach and is usually related to the food he eats.

Rex urgently needs to be seen by your veterinarian for an exam. You likely will need to schedule a dental cleaning under anesthesia. He likely has a very painful tooth root abscess. The vet will remove all tartar, and also clean under the gingiva wich will also remove bacteria which are causing infection and bad breath. He will also remove all rotten and infected teeth. This should greatly increase your dog's quality of life and will help prevent heart and kidney disease. He will also be able to eat properly without a toothache! If Tehya's teeth are fine, I would recommend getting blood work on her to make sure her kidneys are ok. Sometimes with kidney disease they can have a bad smell from their mouth. I would also discuss with your vet about potentially performing a dental procedure with x-rays to confirm there is no abscess we can see. It would be best to have a veterinarian do an exam on him. It’s possible he may have a wound on the roof of his mouth or back of his throat, or a piece of grass or a small twig stuck on a back tooth, etc, or a wound elsewhere in his mouth. It’s also possible that he’s having some tooth root problems with the recent eruption of adult teeth. If he is eating fine and otherwise acting normally, it’s ok to try brushing his teeth and try a rinse or water additive designed for halitosis (bad breath) in dogs.
