Can I get sick if I don't wash hands after feeding my dog?

Raw diets can spread salmonella and E. coli to both humans and dogs. Make sure she follows proper hygiene for herself and the kitchen area where food prep is. If she washes her hands after all contact and washes the bowl immediately then the risk is minimal

There are intestinal parasites that are contagious to humans. These are hookworms and roundworms. They are contagious via fecal oral contact. Cleaning with regular cleaning products should take care of the problem. And also washing your hands before you eat. I have been in the veterinary profession for 16 years and have never gotten parasites myself. More than likely as long as you're cleaning regularly and washing your hands, you should be OK. It is pretty much impossible to catch roundworms from your dog when he vomits them up after being dewormed. I do not think you have to worry. Just wash your hands regularly after touching your puppy (you should always wash your hands after touching a dog).

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is possible that little Billy has roundworms, but with just common sense precautions, your family will be fine. Parasites are sometimes a part of pet ownership, so as long as everyone remembers to wash their hands after playing with Billy, & especially before eating, all will be fine. It was a good idea to crate him until a fecal analysis can be done, but once the appropriate wormer is given you can relax. Take care.

My biggest concern is that he could ingest some intestinal parasite eggs and get worms. So try to prevent him from eating the dirt if at all possible. If not, I would just periodically have him checked for worms - every 4-6 months.
