My vaccinated dog has a dry cough and spits up white foam. Why?

This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection. There are different upper respiratory tract infections possible and unfortunately kennel cough is only one (although the most common) of them. I'm so sorry Mayor is having this problem. Unfortunately, puppies can cough enough that they cough up foam. I would recommend contacting your vet. They may have you take Mayor's temperature at home to see if he is running a fever. We see a lot of upper respiratory diseases in puppies that are contageous, so they may or may not want you to bring him in to the vet. Be sure to let them know if he is lethargic and not eating or just coughing. Even though Harley has had her kennel cough vaccination she can still get kennel cough. Has Harley been to the dog park, day care, kennel or even the groomer? She could have picked it up anywhere there are dogs. If the cough gets worse, isn't eating, has a fever (rectal temperature above 103F) or difficulty breathing it is highly recommended going to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Kennel cough can be viral or bacterial and is typically viral. Some veterinarians will place dogs on antibiotics to prevent a secondary bacterial infection. Ideally a veterinarian should listen to any dog that is coughing. I would call your veterinarian when they are open and discuss this with them since she just went there the other day. While kennel cough is caused by a bacteria called Bordetella bronchiseptica, other bacteria and viruses can cause upper respiratory infections. These can occasionally progress to pneumonia if not treated appropriately with antibiotics and supportive care. Other causes of coughing include collapsing trachea, heartworm disease, heart disease, and masses. I recommend having Tator seen by a vet to rule out the conditions above and receive appropriate treatment. In the meantime, I recommend limiting Tator’s activity so that he does not get stressed and using a harness rather than a collar for walks.

Cough can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another. The most common disease causing cough is a viral infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to know the underlying cause of the coughing without a physical exam and possible radiographs. Pets can cough due to allergies, parasites, collapsing trachea, heart disease, lung disease, cancer, infections or something stuck in the throat. Treatment is different for each of these conditions. It is possible that it is a reaction from the vaccines if they were given in the last 24 hours. However it may be more likely it is related to the pulling and chocking on the leash that has made her throat sore and caused inflammation. If there is no improvement after 24 hours or she can’t get comfortable and get some rest then I would have her rechecked
