Is it safe to vaccinate my 4-week-old bottle-fed puppy early?

Lola is extremely cute! Congratulations! At 4 weeks of age, Lola should still be nursing. Weaning usually begins at four weeks and lasts until about 7 or 8 weeks. Given this, I would recommend bottle/syringe feeding with a puppy Milk Replacement formula until Lola is stronger and can eat regular puppy food. Bottle feeding can be tricky and needs to be done properly. I recommend a good quality food like Hills puppy food for large breed dogs. That has all the nutrition he needs without giving him too much nutrients which can make him fat and cause bone problems from growing too fast. I don’t feed dogs wet food, it’s not necessary. You can moisten the dry for a week or two until he can chew it well. Personally I do not let puppies be around other unvaccinated dogs until they have completed their series of vaccinations at fourteen weeks. Yes 5 weeks is too early for the first vaccination which should be given not before 7-8 weeks, vaccinations have very little to no effect before that. if your other dogs are vaccinated you have nothing to worry about.

No, vaccnes should not begin until 7-8 weeks of age. Additionally I would not recommend a 7 in 1 until the puppy is at least 12 weeks old. Typically only Distemper/parvo and bordetella is recommended this young. Please post again with any further questions.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! 5 weeks is a bit young to leave her mother but if she is fully weaned it should be ok. We usually do not start vaccines until they are 7 weeks of age. Some breeders will give them a parvo vaccine at under 7 weeks. You should be fine until she gets her first vaccine but people with sick dogs or unvaccinated dogs shouldn't handle her and she needs to be kept away from all dogs. I hope this helps and good luck!

The vaccine manufacturer will typically make a recommendation about the age at which to start the vaccine, and there are some leptospirosis vaccines labeled for ages 9 weeks and older. Even if the vaccine was labeled to start later many veterinarians will start vaccines earlier than labeled for dogs at high risk for infectious diseases like those in shelters and do not seem to experience an increase in side effects.
