My unvaccinated puppy walked outside. What disease signs to watch for?

You can just monitor Ares for any signs of illness such as inappetence, vomiting or diarrhea and have him examined if observed. However, that is unlikely. However, the likelihood of Luna developing parvovirus just from being walked in a heavily trafficked area is low unless she directly had contact with feces from an infected dog. I would not be too concerned at this time. Just work with your primary care veterinarian in starting her on a vaccination protocol and avoid contact with other dogs with an unknown vaccination status until she is fully vaccinated. I will tell you what to look for in terms of parvovirus symptoms though again it is unlikely that she has parvovirus. Symptoms usually include lethargy, vomiting and/or diarrhea. Contact your veterinarian to get her set up to start a vaccination program soon. I think she will be fine. Nothing like getting a new pup! I bet she is adorable! Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! At 10 weeks of age, regardless of what vaccines Ted had previously, he is not old enough to consider him fully vaccinated. We vaccinate starting at 7-8 weeks and give the DHPP (or whatever version of that vaccine) every 3-4 weeks until they receive TWO past 12 weeks of age. I have seen dogs who got their last vaccine at 12 weeks still get parvo (at risk breeds like rottweilers and pit bulls). So while I am not in full agreement with the reason you were given I agree that he is not fully vaccinated yet. There is a fine line between protecting him from disease and socialization. He can be socialized with well vaccinated dogs and can go for walks on side walks. He shouldn't play with puppies or dogs where you do not know their vaccine status or play in dog parks. Zeemy is so cute! He needs his DHPPi (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza) vaccine first. He will require two boosters of it given four weeks apart each before he is fully vaccinated. He will not be old enough for a rabies vaccine until he is 12 weeks of age. He can get the rabies vaccine then, and will need a booster of it four weeks after the first to get full immunity. Do not allow him to play with any street dogs or any other strange dogs. Besides rabies, he can also contract deadly diseases like parvo and distemper. He should be kept from all other dogs until he is fully vaccinated. Keep an eye on him for signs of disease including vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the diarrhea, anorexia, lethargy, high fever, reddened eyes, persistent coughing, nasal and eye discharge, sudden changes in behavior, and seizures to name a few. If you see any of those signs, take Zeemy into a vet immediately. I would make an appointment to get his vaccines started asap. Good luck, I hope this helps!

There is a fine line between socialization, house training and exposing the puppy to infectious disease. Most of the worrisome disease are from direct dog to dog contact from sneezing/coughing or fecal-oral. I think your yard is fine. I do not recommend contact with other puppies or dogs are not vaccinated. Keep her up to date on her DHPP by getting it every 3-4 weeks until she receives 2 past 12 weeks of age. I would not recommend it. Without vaccines your dog is not protected against a disease like Parvovirus which can be fatal. The virus lives in the soil and can survive up to one year after it is excreted from the body. The vaccine is highly effective but it must be administered in a proper timeline. I recommend to keep your new pup inside and to get him vaccinated ASAP. Best of luck.

As long as your dog is vaccinated it’s ok to take him out for a walk. Don’t go to the neighbors house and don’t have your dog touch other dogs or wild animals.
