Why is my unneutered 7-month pitbull aggressive with other dogs?

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 20 lbs

My pitbull is 6 almost 7 months not neutered and he is good with two Pomeranians in the house one of them is male in the mail is a year old the other is a female and I believe she is 2 years old but when I take my pity bull to go see other dogs he will snide the other dog and once the other dog starts to sniff him he starts to grawl then he starts barking like crazy and so does the other dog.. Tried with a male and a female at different times..

I'm sorry that you're having this problem with Cssh! Aggression issues between dogs can be very complex, so without being able to actually meet him in person and observe his interactions with the other dogs, it's very difficult to say what might be causing this. Some dogs simply don't get along well with "new" dogs once they have grown out of their puppy stage - this could well be the case with your dog, since he's about 6-7 months old now. This isn't necessarily abnormal, but it may mean that your dog is not a good candidate for casual socializing with strange dogs.

If you want to try and get a better idea of what may be causing Cssh's aggressive behavior and see if anything can be done to improve it, I would recommend making an appointment with a veterinary behaviorist - he/she can evaluate your dog in person and help you understand exactly what is happening. If needed, they can also help you put together a detailed plan to work on the problem. Your veterinarian should be able to find out where your nearest veterinary behaviorist is located, and set up a referral for you if you wish.

In the meantime, I would recommend not allowing Cssh to interact with any dogs that he doesn't already know and like since there is a significant risk that he will continue to behave aggressively, which could cause injury to him or other dog.

You can try to help him acclimate to other dogs by introducing them in a controlled manner, with both dogs on leashes and through a fence initially until you can see how they will react to one another. This will remove the primary source of the hormones most responsible for aggression and will also help with other behavioral issues in the future, as well as reducing the urge to roam in search of females. This will keep him safer and less likely to be hit by a car if he does get out on his own.

Canine aggression is a complex behavior as it can stem from dominance, possessiveness, fear, anxiety, resource guarding or a combination. Most people are not familiar with reading canine body language and training. Because of this, I recommend to work with a professional trainer. Researching on your own will also be helpful. Familiarizing yourself with canine body language and dog training can help you to recognize what your pet is trying to say. You can find many books written on the topic and there is a trainer named Victoria Stilwell who I think is particularly helpful. Certainly male dogs who are not neutered are more prone to fighting and aggression. Neutering him may help but it will not likely solve all the problems. Best of luck.

Some of this may be curiosity and not knowing manners on how to act around new dogs. Some dogs have a different personality and manners on a leash vs. off a leash. She is young enough that seeking a trainer to help socialize her both on and off leash, in new settings, and around new and familiar animals will help her behavior. The more interactions at a young age, the better as long as they are controlled and the proper behavior rewarded

Why does my dog fight other dogs, even when they just want to play?

Unprovoked aggression can have many causes. You don't specify whether or not your dog is neutered, but if he's not, I would consider it very likely that his aggressive tendencies are related to testosterone, and schedule surgery to get him neutered, as removing the source of testosterone (i.e. the testicles) will help tremendously in controlling his aggressive tendencies. If he is neutered, then it's likely that his aggression towards other dogs is rooted in fear. He will need some careful training to help to reverse these feelings, and it may be quite difficult, but is certainly possible. Talk to a trainer in your area about starting with a good general obedience class, which will improve not only your bond but also his confidence level (and thus reduce his fear). You'll have to work to reward him for good behavior by using a small delicious treat to gain his attention and keep him from trying to go after other dogs on walks. In the meantime, always keep him leashed when he's outside in order to protect him as well as other dogs.

Why is my unneutered bulldog aggressive over me to my other dog?

Hi, it is a tricky and difficult situation. First neutering is not advisable at this stage as it could make the situation precipitate further. My advice is to seek help from a professional before the issues become established and get too difficult to tackle. The best person would be a certified behaviourist to whom your vet can refer you to. I know, I wish I could give you clear instructions on the forum and that everything could get better. The reality is you need someone on the ball, someone who goes through a lot of details and information about your pets and home and people in the household and formulate a personalised plan to tackle this issue. They are going to be there to support you along the way, and trust me it will be worthy ! Please don’t let this slip out of your hand, you can’t do everything on your own. I have witnessed several exasperated owners coming in on Sundays asking to have their pets euthanised because they could not cope with constantly having to monitor them or to keep them separated, there are options out there. My dog suddenly attacks other dogs. How can I stop this behavior?

I am very sorry to hear about Bandit. This is a scary situation if Bandit is truly giving no warning prior to his aggressive outbursts. There may be subtle changes in his behavior that are difficult to pick up on without having observed aggressive dogs in the past. Neutering may help decrease his aggression toward other dogs but truly with unpredictable aggression like this a consultation with a veterinary behaviorist is recommended. They can discuss Bandit with you in depth, examine him and observe him in different situations and come up with a training plan to help you manage him (or they may advise he not be around other dogs if they feel his behavior is too unpredictable). I would talk to Bandit's veterinarian to find out about veterinary behaviorists in your area.
