How to train a rescued cocker spaniel to stay and not run away?

Hello, it is not uncommon for unneutered male dogs to roam. This is a natural behavior. Neutering him may decrease some of the desire to roam, but if he has been doing this for awhile, it may already be ingrained in his behavior. I would consider getting a fence, either a phsyical fence, or an electric fence, to try to contain your dog. Or you might consider making him an indoor dog and only having him go outside when supervised. Working at an obedience class may help you train him to return when you call, but I don't think it is going to stop him from wandering when you aren't outside with him.

I recommend training him on a leash to show him where his boundaries are. For example, walk him on a leash around the perimeter of your property, and never beyond. You can make him sit at the edge of your property, and give him a treat. Do this at multiple points around your property. Since he has run off before, he may not learn the true edge of his property. Unfortunately it sounds like Poncho has a mind to explore. Unfortunately this leaves her susceptible to all manner of concerns including snakes and cars. Keeping her restrained with a chain may be what is needed at this time, be sure she has plenty of fresh water and shade if she is restrained outside, and using a running chain rather than one attached to a fixed object can allow a bit more freedom. Regular walks and play with the family can help to calm the roaming urge, and encourage Poncho to stay more home-based. Keeping Poncho on a leash when you let her outside would be beneficial, and you may want to consider an invisible fence system for her too.

I couldn't quite decipher what you were asking about with the chow chow or shar pei, but can give some comments about keeping a dog outside. My experience is similar to yours in regard to allowing a dog free-range. Dogs are very territorial and do not like to wander too far outside of their home unless necessary. Ensuring the dog is desexed, has a good shelter, has adequate food and plenty of water will usually keep a dog from wandering off and getting lost. In my experience, hounds are more likely to run away than any other breeds. I think 570 acres is plenty of room for a dog and it's unlikely that they will run away as long as they have been there long enough to know it's their home. Castration can help with aggressive behavior, and I would schedule that surgery with Murphy's vet. He also needs to see a professional behavioral expert. He is dog aggressive, and this is something that needs to be worked with as soon as possible before he really hurts another dog. He also has the potential to hurt another human being.
