My teething puppy won't eat kibble, but eats bones. Is he okay?

Teething can be painful for puppies, so I would try softening his dry food with warm water, or you can add gently warmed low sodium beef or chicken broth to the dry food to make it softer for him to eat. There are also chew toys you can get for Kiba from the pet store that can be frozen in the freezer, which will help soothe his mouth.

I would try and feed him soft / canned dog food and see how he does with that. If he is still not eating and continuing to worsen, I would recommend having Maximus examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. His teeth will be fine. Kibble isn't hard enough to fracture teeth, only antlers, bones and some toys can wear down teeth over time. However, you should try softening it a bit until he is used to the kibble and a bit stronger so that he an easily eat his food. I am concerned he has another health concern affecting his appetite. Is he experiencing any vomiting, diarrhea, coughing or sneezing? All of these can affect puppy's appetite. He could also be experiencing pain somewhere. In the meantime, continue to offer water to prevent him from becoming dehydrated. You can also try the canned food warmed up or mixed with warm water. If that is accurate, or even if he's less than 6 months old, the "baby" tooth was likely loose, and the adult canine tooth will come in around 5-7 months of age. If he seems painful in his mouth, offer him canned or other soft food for a few days. You can also give him a cold teething toy such as a Kong that you keep in the freezer, Or let him chew on a frozen waffle or even on some ice. The cool will help soothe his mouth if it is sore. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A healthy dog will not choice starvation. It sounds like he is trying to train you to give him what he wants. I would hold your ground. Put the meal down, give him an allotted time to eat it and pick it up until the next meal time. It may take 3 days of holding out for him to realize that this is all it will be. No treats until he is eating his food consistently. He could also be out of sorts from you being away and him staying with your family. If he starts acting sick (vomit, diarrhea, etc) or it has been longer than 3 days have your Vet examine him. Also have a talk with your family about feeding expectations and why you don't want things added to his food. Good luck!

If his mouth is a little sore, then yes he may not eat as much. This may also come with maturity as they realize they don't have to scarf all their food because it will still be there later. Although, we cannot rule out something else is going on. If his food intake decreases more, he starts losing weight or he becomes lethargic, I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet can make sure nothing else is causing the decreased appetite and make sure he gets the proper treatment. You can offer him a little canned food if you feel like it is just a sore mouth. Honestly, if it is just that, his appetite should pick back up within 24-48 hours. I hope this helps!
