When is it safe to switch my puppy from Diamond to Blue Wilderness?

Pet's info: Dog | Rough Collie | Male | neutered | 3 months and 6 days old | 32.2 lbs

I've had my 12 week old rough collie for 6 weeks now and I've been feeding him Diamond Puppy food, in the pruple bag, ever since I got him. I was wondering when could I change his food to Blue Wilderness Puppy food? I don't want to change it too soon, but I feel like he'll enjoy Blue Wilderness better.

Trusty is a good looking pup! I don’t recommend to feed grain free diets unless you know that your dog has a grain allergy. Just so you know, food allergies are uncommon and represent less than 10% of all dogs who have allergies. When pets do you have food allergies, it is usually to the protein, not grains or other carbohydrate sources. Well the connection is not clear yet, there does appear to be a link between grain free diet and heart disease. This likely involves a genetic predisposition to heart disease that the diet exacerbates. I recommend to stay on the diamond food between the two but there are diets I think are better. Royal Canin, Nutro and Purina Pro Plan all produce very high-quality diets that are highly digestible and formulated correctly. Your puppy does need to be eating a large breed puppy food to help avoid skeletal issues as an adult. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Good grain puppy food for my 4-month-old? Switching from grain-free.

I agree. I do not recommend to feed pets a grain free diet unless they have a known grain allergy. There are a few brands that I recommend because I think they’re high quality and pets tend to like the taste. Royal Canin is my number one choice. It is highly digestible and low residue and this tends to result in good stool quality with low stool quantity. Another brand I like is Purina pro plan. Nutro is also a good brand. Is grain-free healthy for my puppy? When can I switch to adult food?

I see Mia is seven months old. She is too young to be on an adult food, she won't be old enough for that until she is 12 month of age. I would hold off on the transition until then. As for that Blue Buffalo food, it's honestly a terrible brand and you'd be hard pressed to find a vet who recommends it. You also need to know vets are seeing an increase in dogs developing dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) who are on grain free foods. The FDA is investigating that link, and Blue Buffalo is named as one of the foods. I never recommend feeding grain free, it's a dangerous fad. Grain allergies are actually very rare in dogs. If you think Mia has an allergy, have her seen by a vet to diagnose what is it so she can be treated properly and I would seriously consider getting your dogs off the grain free food.

Can I switch my dog from grain-free Blue Buffalo to regular food?

Most pets do not have grain allergies. More commonly it's the protein source that causes allergies. For most dogs, grain free is not recommended. For general food, I recommend the brand Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible and this results in great stool quality, minimal quantity and low odor. I also like Nutro and Purina Pro Plan. If you want to rule out a food allergy, the fastest way is a proper food trial using a hydrolyzed protein diet. I hope this helps.

Is Taste of the Wild grain-free puppy food good for my Golden Retriever?

No, I do not recommend it. It's a grain free diet, and vets are seeing a rise in heart disease in dogs who are fed grain free and boutique diets. Dogs are dying from this, and the FDA is now researching it. Grains are fine for dogs, grain free is a fad. I recommend brands such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams.
